SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing clinical and administrative support to pediatric providers in an office-based clinic setting. Involves frequent patient/parent interaction. Requires strong pediatric phlebotomy skills.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Greets patients, in person or on the telephone; answers or refers inquiries.
- Directs and/or accompanies patients to the triage room upon completion of phlebotomy.
- Arranges phlebotomy room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Assists health care providers during examinations as needed.
- Obtains blood specimens from patients by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being performed and/or requested.
- Instructs patients in the proper collection and preservation of urine samples.
- Labels sample accurately and completely.
- Responsible for processing all specimens in accordance with established protocols.
- Monitors and maintains essential patient care and safety during procedures; applies safety principles as identified by established policy.
- Exhibits a high degree of courtesy, tact, and poise when interacting with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
- Adjusts to fluctuating peaks in patient flow, acuity, and other operational demands while maintaining quality.
- Sterilizes medical instruments.
- Maintains inventorying stock & supplies and advises supervisor to place orders as needed.
- Follows clinic workflow and provides feedback for adjustments to workflow as needed.
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment.
- Follows, and enforces standards and procedures; complies with legal regulations.
- Enhances health care practice reputation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of recognized training program in phlebotomy, six months to one-year related experience, or equivalent combination.
- Certificates, licenses, and registrations required:
- Phlebotomy certification
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Computer skills required: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with EHR software strongly preferred.
- Other skills required:
- Ability to understand and adhere to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Ability to manage priorities and workflow.
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
- Bilingual skills a plus.
- Demonstrated competence in reacting to and handling emergencies.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and other external parties in a courteous and friendly manner at all times.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized.
