Summary:

The Family Advocate assumes primary responsibility for supporting parents with family engagement, health services, and accessing family service resources by connecting them to their community. The Family Advocate is responsible for ongoing communication with center staff to ensure that families’ needs, and goals are documented and supported. The Family Advocate maintains complete confidentiality when working with families as outlined in KidZCommunity’s Confidentiality Agreement.

Reporting Requirements:

The Family Advocate is directly supervised by the Family Services Coordinator II or Lead Family Advocate.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Status and Classification:

This is a full- or part-time, non-exempt position. Months vary based on program design and families served.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates within the KidZCommunity vision/mission/values.
  • Operates from the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.
  • Understands and operates using Equity Practices.
  • Follows the Head Start Performance Standards & Title 5.
  • Follows the personnel policies & procedures.
  • Operates within the KidZCommunity health & safety policies & procedures (ie timely health & safety daily checklist).
  • KidZCommunity Operations Manual and Child Development Classroom Policies and Procedures.
  • Understands and operates using Equity Practices including cultural and family beliefs.
  • Follows agency timelines.
  • Works with families to develop Family Needs Assessment, family partnership agreements, and goal setting.
  • Conducts home visits as needed to follow up on program services and progress on goals.
  • Ensures all required data is entered into ChildPlus.net, including health and family services data, and any other information relevant to the child and family.
  • Attends scheduled child family focus meetings with teaching staff.
  • Knows what resources are available in the local area and links families to the resources they need.
  • Maintain communication and contact logs.
  • Actively recruits parent delegates for PC and committees.
  • Attends scheduled monthly case management, reflective supervision and family advocate support groups.
  • Follows the recruitment plan, attendance policy & enrollment process.
  • Maintains children's files, including health and medical information.
  • Engaging families to schedule and complete health, dental, and mental health evaluations and completing follow up based on the schedule of well care appointments.
  • Communicates with the health unit regarding pertinent health information such as communicable disease outbreaks, updates on health follow-up, etc.
  • Uses knowledge of family dynamics and positive guidance techniques when working with families.
  • Plans and designs parent meetings.
  • Interacts with children, families, and staff appropriately.
  • Provides parents with information to gain understanding of how to advocate for their children's needs.
  • Builds relationships in the community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience:

  • One year experience in infant/toddler care a plus.

Education and Permits:

  • Twelve (12) units in Psychology or Social Work with an emphasis on Human Development or Early Childhood Education preferred.
  • Credential or certification in social work, human services, family services, counseling, or a related field required within in 18 months of hire.
  • Continuous enrollment of at least three (3) units per semester to obtain an AA in either Psychology or Social Work.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions:

  • Physical Activity: Frequent standing, walking, stooping, lifting, bending, crouching, crawling, kneeling, carrying, or twisting while holding an infant/toddler in arms; regularly sitting in chairs and on floor. Ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Use of Senses: Ability to articulate a normal conversation with normal hearing whether verbal or over the telephone. Normal vision corrected if necessary.
  • Environmental Conditions: The duties of this position are usually performed in a hazard-free indoor environment and occasionally outdoors in weather conditions. The noise level is moderate.
  • Atmospheric Conditions: No fumes, odors, dust, mildew, smoke, gasses or poor ventilation.

Other Requirements:

  • Department of Justice Fingerprint and child abuse index clearance.
  • Post-offer physical examination; TB clearance; proof of immunization or immunity to pertussis and measles; and annual flu vaccination or signed declination.
  • Current Pediatric First Aid Certificate; current Infant/Child CPR Certificate.
