About KinderSmile Foundation
KinderSmile Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing underserved children and their families with comprehensive dental care and education on the importance of dental hygiene. Established in 2007, the Foundation's mission is to ensure every child has access to a dentist and to eradicate preventable dental diseases, which disproportionately affect economically disadvantaged children.
KinderSmile Foundation operates three Dental Homes in Bloomfield, Newark, and Trenton, New Jersey, serving patients regardless of their insurance status. The Foundation's staff and volunteers are committed to delivering the highest level of care and respect to everyone who walks through their doors.
About the KinderSmile Perinatal Health and Wellness Program (PHWP)
The KinderSmile Perinatal Health and Wellness Program (PHWP) breaks the dangerous cycle of untreated dental diseases by empowering uninsured and Medicaid-enrolled mothers - from pregnancy through 3 years postpartum - with informative, personal, culturally-sensitive training about the importance of maternal oral health and its impact on the developing fetus and young children.
Black and Hispanic communities are uninsured at higher rates, contributing to racial disparities in oral health care and inequities in oral health care access. KinderSmile PHWP strives to close this gap by linking mothers and their young children to a barrier-free, permanent Dental Home. The AAPD recommends linking children to a Dental Home by age 1 or upon the eruption of the child’s first tooth.
Upon completion of our intensive maternal and infant oral health training, eligible graduates receive free dental care to restore their smiles back to full functionality.
To date, KinderSmile PHWP has served 530 mothers and has been translated into Spanish, Arabic, and Haitian Creole, expanding its reach to diverse communities.
