What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Safety Officer position at Kindred Construction?
The CSO, reporting to the HSE Manager, will serve as the primary safety support for an assigned project site, collaborating closely with site project team members and sub-contractors. Additional support for other projects may be required.
The CSO's main responsibility is to implement and oversee the site-specific safety plan, ensuring compliance with the Kindred Health and Safety program, reporting concerns and taking corrective actions when necessary. The role also involves providing both technical and administrative safety support, including guidance on employee safety, work methods, regulations, training, and overall site safety.
Additionally, the CSO will play a key role in planning, organizing, and implementing health and safety initiatives (emergency response drills, safety meetings, toolbox talks) to reinforce the organization’s overall safety program. We are currently hiring for Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Squamish.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer, monitor and promote the HSE Program on-site, encouraging full participation and cooperation of all employees and subcontractors.
- Develops and maintains strong, positive professional relationships with project stakeholders of all levels.
- Communicates with management regarding safety performance, incident trends, and industry related information.
- Maintains current knowledge of HSE Program, Workers Compensation Act and Regulations, owner requirements, and industry safe work procedures and practices.
- Conducts site-specific safety orientations of new employees, transferred employees, and contractor’s workers.
- Conduct job site inspections, submits inspection reports to Superintendent and Safety team members.
- Reviews Contractor safety documents to ensure that they align with Kindred Safety requirements.
- Conducts risk assessments of the workplace when people, equipment, materials, environment and work processes change.
- Investigates and reports all incidents and near misses to the project and safety teams; provides effective recommendations for prevention of recurrences.
- Assists with hazard assessments, creates JHA’s, project safety plans, safe work procedures, and the education and training of employees.
- Posts all bulletins, safety posters, emergency plans, rules and regulations, safety inspections, safety meetings, and any other notices relevant to the HSE Program.
- Liaises with external construction industry safety agencies.
- Works efficiently in teams and independently; maintains a positive, high-energy attitude.
- Assist in the continuous development of the companies Health and Safety program.
- Ensure that all coordination activities are completed in a timely manner on site.
- This will include ensuring that appropriate safety controls are in place during non-routine work hours (e.g. weekend work).
- Maintain strong communication with the HSE Manager.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Construction Safety Officer (CSO).
- Valid CSO certification recognized in British Columbia.
- Advanced First Aid is mandatory or a current OFA 3 ticket.
- Strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and safety best practices.
- Knowledge of BCCSA COR requirements
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment.
- High attention to detail and proactive problem-solving skills.
- Ability and confidence to instill core safety values internally and to trade contractors.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal direction while leading by example
- Basic computer skills; Experience with Outlook, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint is required.
- Experience using Procore Management System is an asset.
