The Property Controller manages and completes a wide variety of transactions within the Resort's accounting department and directs and supervises the accounting department team members and all related departmental functions. In conjunction with the General Manger, this position maintains an atmosphere and culture that sustains strong internal control and achievement of the financial goals of the property.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure a timely month-end close in accordance with the monthly closing schedule.
- Utilize accounting system to facilitate accounting processes and maintain records.
- Support all aspects of accounting management (billing, tax forms, reporting etc.).
- Assist in the formulation and verification of internal controls and policies to comply with corporate and Resort requirements.
- Prepare financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flow), variance reports, general ledger reconciliations, bank reconciliations, cash flow analysis and other reports in compliance with official guidelines and requirements.
- Prepare and/or approve journal entries, invoices and other items required to reconcile accounts for the monthly or annual closing.
- Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly.
- Prepare annual capital and operating budgets and periodic forecasts as directed.
- Review the company’s accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances.
- Oversee payroll data entry function and all other payroll functions including review of schedules, cost reports, and productivity.
- Ensure all accounting related disputes and requests for clarification are resolved and responded to timely.
- Ensure maintenance of all daily filing of documents needed for research requests from guest and in-house users.
- Ensure an effective tracking system for all rebates/adjustments.
- Oversee proper and timely payment of occupancy and sales taxes.
- Monitor transaction flow from POS to PMS to prevent loss of revenue.
- Supervise Accounting Department team members including hiring, training corrective action,performance reviews and terminations.
- Provide effective and factual team member feedback through both formal (performance reviews) and informal (rewards, recognition, etc.) means.
- Assist in daily cash management functions including: online banking, electronic funds transfer, check balances, accounts reconciliation, fax transfers and funding requests as requested by the corporate office.
- Regular attendance and participation in management meetings.
- Assist in preparation of documentation required for annual audit and tax return preparation.
- Special projects as assigned by management or ownership.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from accredited four-year college or university.
- Minimum 4-6 years hotel accounting experience including food and beverage.
- CPA or CHAE preferred.
- Prior experience in internal audit.
- Prior experience with M3 accounting software preferred, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication skills - ability to communicate with management, team members,
guests, and the general public in a courteous, tactful and patient manner, including verbal,
written, telephone and presentation skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy and demanding work environment.
- Dedicated, hard-working, self-motivating to work independently with little guidance.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, property management systems and point of sale systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills, problem solving and planning skills.
- Able to carry out tasks independently and accurately.
- Prior accounting experience, including both night audit, accounts payable and accounts receivable
