Summary

This summer internship is anticipated to take place from June through September 2025 for a total of 12-weeks. Start dates can be flexible.

The Department of Local Services Road Services Division is seeking one Geotechnical Engineer intern to join our highly skilled and dedicated team in the Materials Lab. Through collaboration with engineers, project managers, and support services, you will gain hands-on experience with capital projects, including project design and maintenance. This is an exciting opportunity to provide monitoring and support to Roads countywide bridges, structures, and roads projects.

Who Are We?

The Road Services Division designs, builds, operates, and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated King County. The division is a 24-hour per day, 7 day a week operation with work site locations in Renton, Downtown Seattle, and field locations. The division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road, 185 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

Skills

Your specific workplan will be tailored to your position and individual interests, skills and experience. You can expect to work with team members to:

  • Assist geotechnical engineers during drilling and sampling of soil
  • Perform laboratory soil testing under supervision
  • Participate in geotechnical construction monitoring and preparation of site visit reports
  • Assist with review of specifications and testing standards
  • Assist in compiling and checking data for preparation of soil boring logs
  • Support Engineer staff on various tasks, as needed

Learning objectives may vary based on specific project tasks, and intern interests and skills.

  • Observe and become familiar with basic laboratory testing of soil and aggregates
  • Learn how to prepare geotechnical boring logs reports
  • Gain basic experience with review of specification and materials testing standards

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Some education in or knowledge of civil engineering principles (geotechnical and/or materials engineering)

Who Is Eligible

This position is open to students currently enrolled in college working towards a degree program and continuing in the fall of 2025 from an accredited institution. Current construction management or civil engineering students are encouraged to apply.

Salary Information (Depending On Qualifications)

  • Intern II - Undergraduate pay range is $21.21 to $26.88/hourly
  • Intern III - Graduate pay range is $23.88 to $30.27/hourly

Job Details

  • Work Location: A combination of teleworking and in-office work at the Roads Maintenance (155 Monroe Ave NE, Renton). Occasional in-person work at various King County facilities or project locations may also be required.
  • Work Hours & Schedule: This full-time position works 40- hours per week - 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday, or as otherwise negotiated.
  • Environment: The position requires that the individual visit a variety of project sites (with our staff) including many that may be in pre-design and/or construction phase. This may necessitate the ability to traverse rough terrain or construction sites which generally include uneven surfaces. It also may require the ability to climb rough grades or ladders including work on raised/lowered platforms that may require appropriate safety gear. Work involves walking moderate distances on even and uneven surfaces in the field year-round in varying weather conditions.
  • FLSA Status: This position is non-exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is not union represented.

Benefits

  • 0.025 hours of sick leave accruals for each hour worked.
  • ORCA bus pass.
  • This position is not eligible for vacation leave, holiday pay, retirement programs, or other benefits.

Teleworking Requirements

Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. When teleworking, you are required to have an adequate home office space and maintain a workspace with an internet connection where you can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. The county will supply necessary IT equipment. In addition, King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.
