The Department of Local Services Road Services Division is seeking three Engineer Interns to join our highly skilled and dedicated team. Through collaboration with engineers, project managers, contractors, and support services, you will gain hands-on experience with Roads capital projects and learn about project planning, project management, design, and implementation. This is an exciting opportunity to provide support to Roads projects such as bridges, structures, roadways, sidewalks, fish passage culvert replacements, and drainage improvements.
Based on candidate experience, you will have the opportunity to apply for the following positions:
The Road Services Division designs, builds, operates, and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated King County. The division is a 24-hour per day, 7 day a week operation with work site locations in Renton, Downtown Seattle, and field locations. The division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road, 188 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

- Assist with project management, structural design, and/or inspections
- Assist with preparation, review and evaluation of engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, right of way plans and legal descriptions (may involve field visits) for capital projects
- Assist senior engineers with coordinating, monitoring and controlling project scope, schedule, and budget
- Assist supervisor in developing, modifying, and maintaining work order contracts, Architecture and Engineering contracts, and other contracts as needed
- Assist in the preparation of permit documentation
- Assist in the analysis of project alternatives
- Participate in design review meetings
- Collaborate with support services associated with the project which includes Materials Laboratory, Survey, Environmental, Traffic and involved private utilities
- Support Engineer staff on various tasks as assigned
Learning objectives may vary based on specific project tasks, and intern interests and skills.
- Understanding of and experience with project management principles
- Knowledge of the contract management process
- Civil design, structural design, hydrologic/hydraulic modeling experience
- Design development based on the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Water Crossing Design Guidelines (specific to Fish Passage Engineer Intern)

- Experience in or knowledge of civil or structural engineering
- Experience in or knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3d or GIS
- Experience in or knowledge of HEC-RAS modeling or experience using hydrologic modeling (specific to Drainage Engineer and Fish Passage Engineer Interns)

Job Details
- Work Location: A combination of teleworking and in-office work at the King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St., Seattle WA 98104). Occasional in-person work at various King County facilities or project locations may also be required.
- Work Hours & Schedule: This full-time position works 40- hours per week - 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday, or as otherwise negotiated.
- Environment: The position requires that the individual visit a variety of project sites (with our staff) including many that may be in pre-design and/or construction phase. This may necessitate the ability to traverse rough terrain or construction sites which generally include uneven surfaces. It also may require the ability to climb rough grades or ladders including work on raised/lowered platforms that may require appropriate safety gear. Work involves walking moderate distances on even and uneven surfaces in the field year-round in varying weather conditions.
- FLSA Status: This position is non-exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is not union represented.
- 0.025 hours of sick leave accruals for each hour worked.
- ORCA bus pass.
- This position is not eligible for vacation leave, holiday pay, retirement programs, or other benefits.
