The Department of Local Services Road Services Division is seeking a graduate student intern to join our Business Support Services Unit for an excellent opportunity to be part of local government! In this position, you will use your skills to support the Map and Records Center make progress on significant projects, which benefits the whole Road Services Division. This is an exciting opportunity to not only gain direct working experience, but also to support and exemplify King County’s True North and values.

As the largest division within the Department of Local Services, Road Services Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of roads, 188 bridges, 5.7 million linear feet of drainage ditches, and other related infrastructure in unincorporated King County. Our work directly supports a wide range of functions that provide responsive and effective support to residents and internal Roads and King County customers.

Who May Apply
This position is open to graduate students who are currently enrolled as a full-time student and continuing in the fall of 2025 from an accredited institution. You must provide proof of full-time enrollment upon hire, and for each quarter or semester during the regular school year.
Interview Schedule
Those applicants who pass initial screening will be invited to participate in a 15-minute phone interview the week of 03/10/25.
If you are selected to move forward after the phone interview, you will be invited for a 40-minute virtual/in-person interview the week of 03/17/25.

WORK SCHEDULE
The work week is normally Monday through Friday 8.00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but may at times require work outside of normal business hours. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standard Act and is eligible for overtime pay, with prior supervisor approval.

This is a hybrid position. The work associated with this position will be performed by teleworking, onsite in-office work and meetings as needed. The responsibilities of this position will include regular and ongoing in-office work. Occasional in-person work at various King County facilities or project locations may also be required.
Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.?

- Familiarize yourself with key records preservation principals directly observed on-site.
- Contribute to effectively supporting internal and external customers by assisting in locating records and making referrals to other agencies
- Recognize legal requirements of the Public Records Act and how to follow best practices in fulfilling records requests including public disclosure training.
- Direct access and opportunity to engage with public sector organizational leaders.
- Participate in off-site visits to gain firsthand experience of records management practices throughout the agency and observe public infrastructure projects in the field.
- Leverage technology tools to support effective electronic record management, including supporting efforts to digitize agency records. Learn to research and apply best process improvement practices, delivering actionable recommendations on completing inventory assessments.
- Develop skills in supporting the proper management of records to satisfy Public Records Act requirements.
- Gain technical writing experience supporting the documentation of institutional knowledge.
- Strengthen your ability to review, analyze, and interpret different types of engineering and maintenance files, contributing to…the overall history of the unincorporated King County Road Network.
