This position is open to qualified S.E.I.U. Wastewater Local 925 Senior Operators with a Group III Wastewater Treatment Certificate issued by the Washington State Department of Ecology. Selection will follow Article 8.7 of the Local 925 CBA. 



The King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) has a staffing need for an experienced and technically proficient Wastewater Treatment Senior Operator in Charge (SOIC - West Point - C-Crew).  

About the Role:
The responsibilities of this position include planning, scheduling, coordinating, directing, monitoring and reviewing a crew’s daily work, assigned treatment process and/or special project. Incumbents lead, train and provide technical expertise to operate, monitor and maintain wastewater treatment and odor control equipment, and/or collection and conveyance systems and processes. Responsibilities also include coordinating on-site responses to unusual occurrences and emergencies and may fill in for the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor.

What You Will Be Doing: 
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, monitor and review the daily work of a crew. Coordinate multiple work groups and prepare reports for assigned system or process.
  • Assist supervisor in performance feedback and evaluation of personnel; make recommendations on performance improvement measures.
  • Identify and work with others (supervisor and/or other staff) in purchasing supplies and equipment; maintain inventory.
  • Coordinate and provide technical expertise on special projects.
  • Plan, schedule and prioritize work orders with other divisions, departments, and agencies.
  • Coordinate on-site responses to unusual occurrences and emergencies.
  • Serve as a technical resource for assigned area, system, or process.  Respond to questions from other work crews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications You Bring 
  • Experience with and advanced knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, including preliminary, primary, secondary, digestion, gas handling systems, sludge handling, and plant-wide air, water, electrical, and hydraulic support systems.
  • Skill in the interpretation and application of technical information from plant drawings, operations and maintenance manuals, and lab tests.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for complex wastewater treatment systems and processes and complex odor control systems.
  • Skill in the application of safety policies, procedures, and practices for confined-space entry, fall protection, hazard communication, hazardous energy control, emergency response and evacuation, accident prevention, hearing conservation, back injury prevention, respiratory protection, fire safety, department facilities and operations, forklift training, overhead cranes, and plant-specific and department-wide safety information.
  • Knowledge of and skill in applying leadership techniques and principles.
  • Skill in facilitating short-term workload planning, training, and performance management.
  • Skill in managing written and/or computerized information systems including logs, reports, laboratory and process data, trouble reports, and work requests.

Required Certifications and Licenses:  
  • Washington State Group lll Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License.
  • City of Seattle Boiler Operator Grade III license.

Working Conditions:
  • Work Location: West Point Treatment Plant - 1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 98199.
  • Work Schedule: Standard working hours are 40 hours per week. This position will follow the respective shift schedule for the crew that they are assigned but may be assigned to any shift. Shift crews work two 11.7-hour day shifts followed by two 11.7-hour night shifts, followed by four days off. Applicants must be available to work any assigned schedule. This position is an hourly position governed by the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime-eligible. 
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by S.E.I.U. 925 (Wastewater Treatment Division).
  • Duration: This is a Special Duty Assignment for up to three years. Please note that Special Duty Assignments are only for internal career service employees who have passed their initial probationary period. Employees must have supervisor approval prior to accepting a Special Duty Assignment.
