Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments out of metal. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Essential Duties Learning Outline
Education: A high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) equivalency or other high school equivalency credential may be required.
Physical: Applicants must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
Aptitude Test: All applicants must successfully be admitted to Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC), OR, be authorized to participate in the approved program and partake in the designated coursework aligned with apprenticeship.
Other: On acceptance into the program and prior to being employed, applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug screen.

- Calculate dimensions of workpieces, products, or equipment
- Operate cutting equipment, grinding, and metal or plastic forming equipment
- Program equipment to perform production tasks
- Monitor equipment operation to ensure proper functioning
- Review blueprints or other instructions to determine operational methods or sequences
- Maintain production or processing equipment
- Assemble machine tools, parts, or fixtures
- Determine metal or plastic production methods
- Prepare fabrics or materials for processing or production
- Mount attachments or tools onto production equipment
- Conduct test runs of production equipment
- Install mechanical components in production equipment
- Design tools, fixtures, or other devices for production equipment
- Diagnose equipment malfunctions
- Draw guidelines or markings on materials or workpieces using patterns or other references
- Measure materials to mark reference points, cutting lines, or other indicators
- Disassemble equipment for maintenance or repair
