Job Overview
We are seeking a Pre-School Head Teacher to join our organization! This individual will manage the classroom setting by conducting day-to-day activities and maintain a clean, safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment. Intentionally plan for developmentally, appropriate learning experiences and engages in reflective processes to maintain an effective classroom. Provide guidance to Assistant Teachers.
Responsibilities:
- Develop meaningful and developmentally appropriate lesson plans that address both individual and group needs among children across all domains: cognition, social and emotional development, physical health and development, language and literacy, creative arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
- Ensure that all paperwork that may arise in the classroom, including but not limited to lesson plans, observational material and associated documentation relevant to the CT DOTS program, attendance sheet, meal count sheet, nutrition, daily health checks, fire drill records, narratives, and daily notes is completed and filed in an organized manner.
- Monitor and maintain the classroom environment, including cleanliness, organization, minor repairs, and health and safety components. Reports violations to supervisor.
- Actively participates in all required meetings, including but not limited to orientation, team meetings, parent groups, and training sessions.
- Develop activities that support intentional teaching goals. This includes engaging in ongoing teacher-parent meetings and assisting with tasks and activities as requested.
- Record daily observations of children and uses observations to perform on-going assessments. Assessments must follow the Pre-School Assessment Framework (for the Pre-School classroom) or address CTELDS standards (for pre-school), with assessment determinations for each Standard being supported by at least 3 separate observations taken in at least two different settings.
- Promote a family-style meal service by having children sit in small groups and independently serve themselves from communal bowls, assisting children with serving themselves, role modeling good eating habits.
- Ensure that the health and safety needs of children are met at all times. This may include protecting children with allergies from offensive allergens/foods, administering medication (if certified) to children with health care plans, or providing emergency medical care (if certified).
- Provide consistent supervision of children by sight and sound at all times.
- Promote a sanitary, healthful environment. Sweeps after each meal or as needed, sanitizes toys that have been in contact with child’s bodily fluids, sanitizes toys once a week and sanitizes toilets and toileting areas after each use.
- Form and maintain emotional and social, supportive relationships with children. Understand and respond to children’s cues and developmental needs.
- Engage in on-going communication with children to support language and literacy development.
- Promote an inclusive, diverse childcare setting that embraces children and families of all races, religions, socioeconomic status, abilities, and sexualities. The teacher may at no time use the program’s facilities or services to promote certain creeds over others.
- Provide cooperation and assistance in obtaining and maintaining NAEYC accreditation standards.
- Responsible for training and supporting the development of all Teacher Assistants assigned to the classroom.
- Work with the Assistant Teacher(s) to develop a classroom portfolio for NAEYC accreditation.
- Collaborate with community agencies, specialists, consultants, and other professionals to advance the needs of students, improve the quality of the classroom, and support family strength.
- Perform other tasks as requested by the Director, Site Manager and Curriculum Coordinator.
Qualifications:
- To be eligible for this position, the employee must be 18 or older
- Have at least an Associate Degree in ECE and/or a CCAC ladder level of 10 or above. Exceptions to this requirement may be made if there is evidence of a plan to meet this requirement within a reasonable period
- Must be able to: lift 35 pounds
- Must be able to provide supervision by sight and sound
- Pass a criminal background check
- Be free of substantiations from DCF
- Passionate about working with children
- Ability to build rapport with children
- Positive and patient demeanor
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Have quick adaptive skills
