POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. As the Aquatic Specialist at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals. The Aquatic Specialist responds to member and guest needs and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes, lifeguards, and swim instructors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Instructs swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
2. Develops positive relationships with members and participants and provides motivational support and guidance.
3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other programs.
4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
6. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
7. Enforce pool rules and regulations to maintain a safe environment
8. Lifeguard and teach swim lessons as needed
9. Assist with pool maintenance tasks such as cleaning, chemical testing, and equipment checks
10. Open and close the pool according to procedures as needed.
11. Knows/reviews all YMCA Policies, rules, regulations, procedures emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
12. Assists in recruiting, training, and developing appropriate staff and volunteers. Interprets YMCA policies and procedures to all staff and volunteers in a positive manner. Including teaching classes, lifeguarding & swim Instruction. Including leading lifeguard and swim instructor in-service.
13. Sub/fill in/backup/emergency guard for others as needed.
14. Other administrative duties as assigned to reach. Not to exceed 10 hours/week of admin duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:
· Previous swimming, teaching or related experience.
· Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (will certify). Must pass Lifeguard certification class.
· CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications required.
· Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic
segments of the community
· Must be able to demonstrate Swim Instructor Skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
· Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
· Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
· Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
· Ability to work in a chlorine environment. Ability to work in high humidity. Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour
