What are the responsibilities and job description for the FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN position at Kitsap County, WA?
OVERVIEW
The Facilities Maintenance Department is responsible for the oversight and maintenance of County buildings and properties. Work is performed in and around County facilities throughout Kitsap County, including the Kitsap County Corrections Center, Juvenile Detention Facility, Kitsap Recovery Center and the Medical Examiner's Office. The department also responds to tenant issues for staff and the public who conduct business at the County.
Our new Technician will be responsible for performing skilled work in one or more trades such as carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, masonry, or related trades areas. Employees may occasionally be responsible for performing in specialized trade areas, however, they are also required to learn and participate in building maintenance activities associated with other trades.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR PERFORMANCE OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Required Education and Experience
- One - two years' experience in maintenance, operations or mechanical work in related field.
- Related education demonstrating required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job may substitute for up to six months of experience.
- Experience in HVAC
- Experience with industrial controls (low voltage)
- Experience working in commercial or public buildings
- Experience working in a correctional facility
- Associate's degree from a trade or technical school
Prior to employment, the successful candidate must:
- Pass a pre-employment physical.
- Pass a criminal history background check (fingerprinting) through law enforcement agencies.
- Submit a copy of their State employment driving record abstract to verify their eligibility to drive for Kitsap County.
- The successful incumbent must meet the driving requirements of this position and submit a copy a current driving record/abstract (from state of residency) to review for eligibility to drive for Kitsap County prior to employment.The successful incumbent must obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy.

- Incumbents in this position are considered "Essential Employees". Essential employees are expected to report for duty on time and remain at work until the end of their scheduled shift even if an inclement weather event or emergency is declared.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Performs or assists with various tasks in the areas of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, painting and general building maintenance including major overhauls as needed. Reads and interprets various blueprints, sketches and drawings and applies skilled knowledge to implement maintenance project plans and troubleshoots problems in area of expertise.
- Maintains records and completes work orders.
- Assists with corrective repairs on boilers, heat pumps, motors, HVAC systems, laundry and kitchen equipment; thermostats, and low voltage equipment, and fire or security alarm systems including security door controls.
- Repairs or replaces doors, locks, window glass, interior walls, shelving, bookcases and other building parts.
- Assists with preventative maintenance on tools, machinery, equipment and emergency generators.
- Performs welding or other fabrication assignments on equipment, facilities, or structures.
- Helps with performing routine inspection o low-pressure boilers and logs the results.
- Operates equipment requiring more technical skill, such as hand and power tools and large equipment that does not require complex, specialized knowledge. Performs operational checks and reports needed repairs. Performs operational checks and preventive maintenance activities; reports needed equipment repairs.
- Provide technical knowledge and problem-solving techniques for assigned functions.
- Maintains various including work performed, time spent, materials used and related information; enters and extracts data using automated systems; maintain manuals records as required.
- Provides assistance to public including responding to customer inquiries, explaining program rules and regulations, and assisting with maintenance of public safety.
- Employs any and all protective equipment necessary to perform tasks when working with chemicals or in the disposal of waste.
