SUMMARY OF POSITION :
Design Engineer Apprentice is responsible for completion of schooling, mentor training and cross-functional production training as defined by the Design Mentorship program. This includes design engineering support for new and existing product, including part, tool, fixture, and gage design in a metal stamping, fabricating and assembly environment. The three-year Mentorship program completes with the transition to Exempt, Design Engineer I position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
Under the guidance of Sr. Design Engineers, complete Design Mentorship elements including, but not limited to :
- Complete production department cross-training rotations as a Production Helper or Operator
- Satisfactorily complete course work as defined by Design Mentorship program
- Read and interpret part prints, print changes and specifications
- Design tools for sheet metal punching, forming and fabricating including selection of standard tools
- Design gages, staging fixtures and comparator traces to support inspection of production parts
- Design fixtures for welding and assembly
- Prepare detailed tool component drawings and bill of materials for Tool Build
- Prepare part, supplier, inspection and process drawings for Production
- Pass competency requirements for each phase of the Design Mentorship program
- Support internal teams with other design assistance as required
- Other duties as assigned or required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; frequently required to sit and talk or hear; occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
