ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

Role Overview:
This position is responsible to safely supervise and coordinate activities of project in Asphalt & Concrete paving, grading, milling.

Gravel Base - To oversee efficiency of gravel/base operation and produce quality.

Milling - To oversee efficiency of milling operation and base jobs to produce quality gravel/base product.

Paving - To oversee efficiency of paving operation to produce quality asphalt product.

Concrete Paving - To oversee efficiency of paving operation to produce quality concrete product.


EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Over 2 years up to and including 4 years from post high school, work, military, institutional or vocational environment.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in product line and supervisory role.
  • Ability to provide and maintain proper licensure, medical card and acceptable driving record.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform daily equipment, walk around and site inspections to identify and correct any unsafe conditions and keep equipment properly maintained.
  • Safely and properly supervise and coordinate activities of projects.
  • Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with difficult people under high stress situations. Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous/respectful of others.
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve situations/problems (material quality, equipment operation/repair, etc.). Monitor and discuss production problems with co-workers and managers/supervisors.
  • Reports to General Superintendent or Project Manager daily, especially when there are occurrences that can affect the successful completion of a project.
  • Maintains and works with General Superintendent on projects schedules to ensure that all materials have been ordered and will be delivered on time; all equipment, Knife River personnel and subcontractors have been scheduled.
  • Ability to complete and prioritize multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Ability to meet scheduling deadlines and work in stressful situations.
  • Ensure that crews are meeting project budgets daily.
  • Assist with interviewing and hiring personnel.
  • Responsible for identifying areas where employees are not meeting performance standards, providing targeted coaching and development opportunities to help them improve their skills and reach the required competency level for their role.
  • Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR regulation compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Gravel Base

  • Communicate gravel/base crew needs with dispatch.
  • Communicate needs with plant.
  • Work with crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to complete projects.
  • Complete quality gravel/base jobs within specifications.
  • Coach employees.
  • Communicate needed information to employees.
  • Complete necessary paperwork.
  • Deliver samples to lab.
  • Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily.

Milling

  • Communicate crew needs with dispatch.
  • Communicate needs with plant.
  • Work with crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to complete projects.
  • Complete quality gravel/base jobs within specifications.
  • Coach employees.
  • Communicate needed information to employees.
  • Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily.

Paving

  • Communicate paving crew needs with dispatch - Calculate number of trucks required to haul aggregate and/or hot mix asphalt according to capacity of vehicles, traffic conditions, distance from work site and productivity of drivers.
  • Communicate needs to plant.
  • Work with crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to complete projects.
  • Coach employees.
  • Communicate needed information to employees.
  • Assist new employees.
  • Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily
  • Tour work site to ascertain progress in meeting time schedules and to detect insufficient utilization of workers and equipment.
  • Measure slope and thickness of paving to verify compliance with contract.
  • Measure distances from reference points to locate boundaries of construction site.
  • Directs work crews engaged in operation of vehicles and machines.
  • Supervise asphalt and concrete paving crews, aggregate production crews or crews engaged in operating machines to tamp, roll and smooth surface for subgrade of highway.
  • Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily.
