What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Record Technician – PRN position at Knoxville Hospital & Clinics?
This is a PRN position working Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-6 hours each day.
Health Information specialist who possesses the technical skills necessary to analyze, evaluate, store, and retrieve the medical record to facilitate delivery of health services.
Essential Functions
- Verifies patient information to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Understands and complies with policies and procedures related to medicolegal matters including confidentiality, amendment of medical records, release of information, patient rights, medical records as legal evidence, informed consent, etc.
- Abstracts data from the medical record for the compilation of administrative & clinical statistics and inputs & maintains coded data in manual or automated disease and operative indices.
- Recognizes and reports unusual circumstances and/or information with possible risk factors to appropriate risk management personnel and reports problems, errors, and discrepancies in dictation and patient records to Director of HIM.
- Processes daily admissions and discharges including department census sheets, checking admissions and medical record numbers.
- Notifies the business office of incorrect medical record number assignment, delivers charts to patient care areas, organizes charts on discharge, and completes daily census and statistical reports.
- Recognizes and reports unusual circumstances and/or information with possible risk factors to appropriate risk management personnel and reports problems, errors, and discrepancies in dictation and patient records to Director of HIM.
- Complies with mandatory reporting by completing monthly statistical report and Maryland project reports and by retrieving and submitting data for tissue committee report to Laboratory Director.
- Performs other duties as assigned and requested.
Job Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent. Graduate from accredited school of Health Information Management preferred.
- Fluent use of medical/healthcare terminology.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision are required.
- Required to complete all annual competency training and maintain license and/or certification.
- Regular and predictable attendance is required.
