This critical role is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation and maintenance of computer systems, networks, and related equipment, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime. The ideal candidate should possess extensive knowledge of computer operations, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.Essential Functions, Responsibilities & Duties may include, but are not limited to : The Computer Operator V will be responsible for : Monitoring and controlling computer systems, networks, and peripheral equipment to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations.Performing routine maintenance tasks, such as software updates, system backups, and hardware checks, to maintain system integrity and reliability.Identifying and resolving operational issues, system errors, and hardware / software malfunctions through troubleshooting and diagnostics.Coordinating with technical support teams and vendors to address complex system problems and implement solutions.Ensuring data security and integrity by following established protocols and procedures for data backup, recovery, and access controls.Maintaining accurate records and documentation of system operations, maintenance activities, and incidents.Training and providing technical guidance to junior computer operators and support staff.Collaborating with IT professionals, system administrators, and other stakeholders to optimize system performance and implement enhancements.Staying up to date with the latest technologies, tools, and industry best practices in computer operations and maintenance.RequirementsEducation : Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.Ability to obtain a Public TrustWork Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Minimum of 5 years of experience in computer operations, system administration, or a related role in an IT environment.Resolve a variety of difficult operating problems (e.g., making unusual equipment connections and rarely used equipment and channel configurations to direct processing through or around problems in equipment, circuits, or channels or reviewing test run requirements and developing unusual system configurations that will allow test programs to process without interfering with ongoing job requirements).Respond to computer output instructions and error conditions to avoid loss of information or to conserve computer time, operator deviates from standard procedures.Spend considerable time away from the control station providing technical assistance to lower level operators and assisting programmers, systems analysts, and subject matter specialists with resolution of problems.Relevant certifications in computer operations, system administration, or related areas (e.g., CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco) are preferred.In-depth knowledge of computer systems, networks, and peripheral equipment, including hardware and software components.Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues.Proficiency in operating system administration, system monitoring tools, and scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash).Excellent understanding of data backup and recovery procedures, as well as data security and access control measures.Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze system performance and identify areas for improvement.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document procedures and provide technical guidance.Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.Desired Skills and Competencies : Experience in a government or military IT environment, with knowledge of relevant regulations and compliance requirements.Familiarity with virtualization technologies, cloud computing, and containerization.Knowledge of automation tools and scripting languages for system administration tasks.Understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices for secure system operations.Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.Working Environment & ConditionsThis job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time.
