ABOUT THE POSITION
The NJ Education Department seeks a passionate and skilled part-time Rising 9th-grade Debate Instructor for an intensive two-week summer program (August 18th – August 29th) in Tenafly, NJ. The instructor will teach rising 9th graders twice a week for four hours per day, leading students through fundamental and advanced concepts of debate and public speaking. Students will learn to construct logical arguments, respond to counterpoints, and develop their public speaking skills. The ideal candidate will foster a fast-paced yet supportive environment where students can build confidence, learn debate formats, and improve their communication abilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver engaging and rigorous debate lessons tailored to rising 9th-grade students.
- Teach public speaking techniques, argument structure, rebuttal strategies, and debate formats.
- Provide individualized feedback and coaching to help students strengthen their presentation skills.
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and challenging classroom environment.
- Prepare students for final presentations or mock debates by the end of the program.
- Ensure the classroom is properly set up and organized before and after each session.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Communications, English, Political Science, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: At least 2 years of teaching or coaching experience, preferably in debate, public speaking, or related subjects at the high school level.
- Instructional Skills: Strong ability to lead structured, interactive, and goal-oriented learning sessions.
- Classroom Management: Skilled at maintaining an inclusive and productive learning environment.
- Technology: Familiarity with digital literacy tools and educational platforms is preferred.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English is required.
- Availability: Must be able to commute to Tenafly, NJ, and commit to the 2-week summer program.
Compensation
$45-55/hr
