Organization Background

Founded in 1992 by NBA Legends Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, Archie Clark, Dave Cowens and Oscar Robertson, the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) is a non-profit association comprised of former professional basketball players of the NBA, ABA, WNBA, and Harlem Globetrotters. They are the only alumni association of its kind supported directly by the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

With energetic corporate leadership and a unified Board, the future has never been brighter at the NBRPA. The Association provides a host of programs, services and benefits designed to help retired basketball players and their families successfully navigate life after the game. In support of its membership, the NBRPA proactively offers a full menu of education, health, finance and career / life transition benefits to retired basketball players and their families.

Working in conjunction with the NBA and NBPA, the NBRPA's membership promotes basketball and enhances the sport's image by building community relationships and fostering support for charitable activities and philanthropic events with a connection to the game.

By playing in the NBA, ABA, WNBA or with the Harlem Globetrotters, NBRPA members helped build the game of basketball and - through the distinction of an on-court professional career at the sport's highest levels - remain ambassadors to the game for life. NBRPA members embody the game long after taking the court professionally and put their notoriety to positive use as spokespersons and conduits of good will in the basketball community.

MISSION STATEMENT

The National Basketball Retired Players Association serves former professional basketball players, supporting them in life after their playing days, and helping them to leverage their inspirational influence to promote and teach basketball in their communities.

NBRPA CORE ASSETS

The NBRPA has five core assets :

1. Membership - The NBRPA has more than 1,000 members that played in the NBA, ABA, WNBA or with the Harlem Globetrotters (including the game's greatest players of all time).

2. Access - The NBRPA serves as the premier, central contact point for all NBA, ABA, WNBA and Harlem Globetrotter retired players.

3. Events - The NBRPA hosts several charitable, corporate and private events annually, including cornerstone events during the NBA's All-Star Weekend, as well as the annual Legends Conference during NBA Summer League.

4. Legends Care ™ - The 501(c)3 charitable arm of the NBRPA is dedicated to youth programs and additionally addresses several social and economic issues membership faces in life after basketball.

5. Chapters - With local branches in 12 cities - Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orlando and Phoenix, the NBRPA Chapters bring the organization's assets, visions and programs to local communities.

Position Summary

In furtherance of the mission and vision of the NBRPA, the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) works collaboratively with the Board of Directors, staff, and other constituencies to provide leadership in developing and executing the strategic priorities of the organization. They lead the staff in the implementation of the strategic plan's goals and objectives and in the management of all other aspects of the organization. The CEO serves as a key representative, voice, and influence for the NBRPA with multiple internal and external stakeholders, and ensures that the programs, activities, and services of the organization support former professional basketball players after their playing days.

The CEO is responsible for managing $5 million in annual revenue and 7-9 staff. Through effective leadership and management, the CEO fosters high performance and growth consistent with the respective missions, visions, strategic plans, and values of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

The NBRPA CEO's primary duties and responsibilities include oversight of organizational leadership and strategic planning; administrative and staff management; fiscal management; board engagement; and strategic partnerships and external affairs.

Organizational Leadership and Strategic Planning

  • Demonstrates an energetic, entrepreneurial nature that combines leadership and intellectual curiosity with practical management skills.
  • Develops and leads the implementation of NBRPA's organization-wide vision and long-term strategic plan with appropriate delegation to direct reports.
  • Provides inspiring leadership and ensures NBRPA's team-driven culture supports the mission while promoting synergy and collaboration across the organization.
  • Ensures all operations, human, and financial resources are sound and aligned to provide the highest impact and implementation.
  • Develops and enhances a robust digital strategy, social media presence. and technology platform to foster innovation, growth, and positive user experience.

Administrative and Staff Management

  • Provides organizational and operational leadership and direction to the NBRPA staff. The CEO will communicate Board decisions, policies and programs to the employees and translate those goals into specific action plans and accountabilities.
  • Maintains a work environment that motivates and rewards employees for individual and team achievements and contributions.
  • Attracts, inspires, retains, develop, and manages a diverse, talented, and high-performing team, to ensure that the mission and values of NBRPA are put into practice by holding everyone accountable for quantifiable high-quality, timely, impactful, and cost-effective results.
  • Empowers staff to achieve desired goals and foster a culture of openness, collaboration, inclusivity, and teamwork.
  • Fiscal Management

  • Maintains financial stability for NBRPA and develops a financial plan that supports a growth strategy focused on measurable outcomes such as : revenue generation, streamlining costs, quality improvements, membership growth, and new product / program / service innovation.
  • Provides accurate analysis of budgets, reports, and financial trends and operational procedures to assist the Board in decision-making.
  • Evaluates NBRPA's financial and operational structures to plan for continual improvements and increase in operating efficiencies.
  • Board Engagement

  • Maintains a transparent relationship with the Board of Trustees and works collaboratively with board members / committees to establish NBRPA's strategic direction and policies, enabling the organization to adapt to a constantly changing external environment.
  • Administratively supports the Board in the recruitment and cultivation of new members and committee chairs that best fit the organization's values, strategic objectives, and functional needs.
  • Provides regular reports and communicates on all strategic, operational, and programmatic matters.
  • Oversees the preparation of annual operating plans and budgets for review and approval by the Board.
  • Strategic Partnerships and External Affairs

  • Serves as a key representative and spokesperson for the NBRPA to advance its' mission, vision and programs.
  • Develops and maintains strategic professional organizational relationships with the NBA, WNBA, NBPA, Harlem Globetrotters, league owners, professional teams, and other external stakeholders.
  • Ensures strategic alignment of branding, marketing, public relations, and communication efforts.
  • Actively ensures NBRPA's long-term fundraising efforts to secure significant gifts and investments from individuals and institutions.
  • Success Factors

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, develop a strategic plan and vision for the NBRPA to advance its goals and objectives.
  • Establish credibility and rapport with the NBRPA staff, Board, NBA, WNBA, NBPA, Globetrotters, league owners, professional teams, and other external stakeholders.
  • Assess the evolving needs of retired basketball players to increase the relevancy and desirability of NBRPA to its current and future membership. Develop strategy to increase membership.
  • Create, measure, and analyse current and potential revenue streams, offerings, and relationships to optimize business growth.
  • Develop programs to advance the growth of local state chapters and reestablish NBRPA's identity in the community.
  • Secure principal and major gifts by identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major prospective and current donors.
  • Evaluate and enhance the charitable, corporate and private events annually, including the NBA's All-Star Weekend and the annual Legends Conference during MBA Summer League.
  • Leadership Attributes

    The ideal CEO candidate is an executive-level leader who can partner with the Board of Directors to advance NBRPA's mission and vision and ensure the organization's effectiveness, growth, and relevancy. The ideal candidate will have a depth of experience and acumen in strategic planning, relationship-building, human capital management, technology, and fundraising, and should possess the following background, experience, and skills :

  • A servant-leader who can promote and communicate the philosophy, mission, and values of the organization to retired and current players and external and internal stakeholders.
  • A record for building and leading a highly professional, knowledgeable, and diverse staff team in a performance driven, dynamic, member-focused, and results-oriented environment. A leadership style of identifying, developing, and engaging staff and fostering a culture of trust, inclusion, collaboration, and empowerment.
  • Experience reporting to and collaborating effectively with a volunteer Board of Directors in the development and implementation of a strategic plan and fostering trusting and transparent relationships. Experience engaging diverse viewpoints and forging consensus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, influence, and relationship building skills, key to forging strong relationships, establishing trust, and engaging diverse stakeholders internal and external to NBRPA.
  • Experience in organizational fiscal management including budgeting and forecasting, long-range financial planning, investment management, and audit compliance. Experience developing and administering organizational budgets and identifying and directing outside resources to maximize their contributions to strategic results.
  • Steeped in diverse communities to build upon NBRPA's shared vision, values, accomplishments, and credibility to inspire even greater impact and innovation.
  • Practical knowledge of technology to ensure NBRPA offers superior service, tools, and efficiencies to support its mission and objectives in a cost effective and timely manner.
  • Strong, proven communicator; ability to communicate complex frameworks, both orally and in writing, to diverse stakeholders, and be a persuasive, enthusiastic public speaker.
  • Successful record of growing top-line revenue, establishing innovative sources of income, and driving sustainable growth.

    An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

    Compensation

    Salary : $300,000 - $350,000, dependent on experience.
