POSITION SUMMARY
DEFINITION
Under supervision, to draw blood; to perform routine clinical laboratory and clerical work; and to do other duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class prepare and process laboratory specimens according to standardized procedures and operate laboratory equipment that does not require technical judgment, decisions, or direct determination of test results.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Satisfactory completion of phlebotomy course approved by the State of California.
Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way would be:
Minimum of one year experience as Phlebotomist in a hospital or healthcare environment preferred.
Completion of a certified training program with required practical application of phlebotomy techniques on all age groups.
Licensure/Certification
Possession of a valid Phlebotomy Certificate issued by the State of California.
BLS Certification (AHA)
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Common laboratory terminology.
The preparation of solutions, and stains.
Routine laboratory methods and procedures including safety procedures for working with patients.
Standard laboratory phlebotomy procedures and equipment.
Laboratory Information Systems.
Ability to:
Draw blood from patients.
Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgement/action which could result in undesirable patient outcomes.
Learn elementary laboratory methods, procedures, and measurements.
Performs basic phlebotomy techniques on all age groups.
Keep accurate records.
Follow oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
AGE-SPECIFIC COMPETENCY (If applicable)
Maintains, demonstrates and is assessed on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for physical, psychosocial and cultural needs appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
