The visual journalism intern shoots and edits photography or video to accompany news stories on KQED.org and on engagement platforms. You will be strongly encouraged to pitch and file at least one in-depth visual story during your internship. Please include a link to a portfolio of your work and a cover letter to let us know what you are passionate about reporting.

KQED envisions a public media organization with a culture that centers on human dignity, equity, and belonging. This will enable us to better serve and reflect the Bay Area through diverse and inclusive storytelling.

We value the contributions of marginalized people in society — including Black, Indigenous, and all people of color,  people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA people — and we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, and we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply.

The mission that drives us:

KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media.   We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.

This role requires working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working in the field. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Essential Functions:

We encourage applicants to bring their unique skills, interests, and passions to the table and work with us to find a trajectory toward growth unique to them. Here’s what your work with us could include:

  • Collaborate with reporters and editors across the organization, including in News, Science and Arts, to produce engaging visual journalism.
  • Shoot and edit photos, either alongside reporters or independently.
  • Interact with community members and organizations in the Bay Area.
  • Collaborate with newsroom colleagues to generate and implement new ideas for visual journalism across multiple KQED platforms.
  • Attend weekly digital team meetings.

Other job functions: A priority for this intern position is to sharpen visual skills and instincts and hone the ability to collaborate in a newsroom setting — even if it's done remotely.

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Knowledge of photography and an eye for storytelling.
  • Strong written and/or oral communication skills.
  • Strong news sense and ability to generate creative story ideas.
  • Independent thinking and working well in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with DSLRs and other visual production equipment.
  • Previous experience editing photos. Adobe experience is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and goals while working under pressure.

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

  • Passionate about centering and supporting communities in telling their own stories from their own experiences.
  • Familiarity or strong interest in using video production equipment and editing video.
  • Strong interest in public media.

Growth & Development Opportunities:

  • You will be mentored and provided with hands-on guidance and direction to develop your skills as much as possible and prepare you for work at other news outlets.
  • Bring your unique passions to the table, and we will find the path that fits you and your growth.
