Job Summary:

Kumukahi Health Wellness (KHW) is excited to announce an incredible opportunity for a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a full-time Sexual Health Navigator in the vibrant West Hawai'i area. If you're a motivated advocate eager to make a difference, this is your chance to impact the health and well-being of our community!

In this dynamic role, you will be on the front lines of promoting awareness around HIV, STIs, and viral hepatitis, helping to educate the public about KHW's vital services, and building strong partnerships with local organizations and community members. You’ll play an integral part in providing HIV, STI, and viral hepatitis testing (training will be provided), while engaging with key groups such as individuals living with HIV, gay and bisexual men, transgender people, and those who inject drugs. Your outreach efforts will include both face-to-face and online connections to support and empower those in need.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead HIV, STI, and hepatitis prevention efforts through education that emphasizes safer sex and injection practices rooted in Harm Reduction principles.
  • Engage with diverse populations through both face-to-face and online outreach, including people living with HIV, their partners, transgender individuals, gay and bisexual men, sex workers, and individuals who inject substances.
  • Distribute essential harm reduction tools, such as condoms, clean syringes, and educational materials, to empower individuals to protect their health.
  • Facilitate impactful presentations, support groups, and safer sex workshops tailored to our target populations, utilizing pre/post quizzes to gauge effectiveness and learning outcomes.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records, including detailed logs of outreach activities, participant information, and demographic data to support program evaluation and reporting.
  • Participate in training sessions, workshops, and in-service events at agencies, prisons, and various community facilities to enhance knowledge and outreach efforts.
  • Stay at the forefront of research, trends, and best practices in HIV/STI prevention and harm reduction to ensure the most up-to-date and effective approaches.
  • Provide personalized advocacy and referral services to clients, ensuring they receive the resources and support they need.
  • Conduct targeted community outreach to increase awareness of HIV/STI prevention and harm reduction practices, encouraging safer behaviors across populations.
  • Assess program outcomes and effectiveness, identifying areas for improvement and making informed recommendations to enhance the program's impact.
  • Advocate for policies that promote harm reduction and protect the rights of individuals affected by HIV/STIs, championing change on both a local and broader scale.
  • Serve as a key liaison between KHW and other service organizations to coordinate care and share valuable resources.
  • Assist individuals in accessing medical insurance by referring uninsured clients to available resources.
  • Support quarterly report preparation, ensuring accurate documentation and insights for program assessment and growth.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Abilities & Experience:

  • Basic understanding of HIV, STI, and viral hepatitis transmission, prevention, and treatment, with a focus on providing accurate and supportive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong connections with diverse populations, including sex workers, individuals at risk for STIs, LGBTQ community members, the unsheltered, substance users, non-binary or gender non-conforming people, and those who are justice-involved.
  • Passionate commitment to advancing health equity and actively working to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV/STIs and substance use.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of engaging and fostering trust with individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and an open-minded approach to working with people from diverse ethnicities, sexual orientations, and with HIV.
  • Proficiency in managing and reporting data accurately, ensuring program outcomes are well-documented and tracked.
  • Strong sense of confidentiality, with the ability to maintain privacy and respect for sensitive client information.
  • Punctual and reliable with a commitment to attending team meetings and staying engaged with program needs.
  • Flexible with work schedule and open to participating in community events and outreach efforts as needed.
  • Valid Hawaii driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience, including at least two years of experience working with individuals from the target populations mentioned above.
  • At least one year of experience or relevant education in harm reduction, public health, or related fields, with a focus on practical, impactful solutions for community health.

Schedule:

  • 35 hours per week
  • Flexible scheduling may be available, with occasional evenings and weekends required.

Compensation:

  • $18-$20 per hour

Work Location: In office, with some events in the field.

Computer Skills:To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of the Google suite of office tools: Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, etc as well as Microsoft Office, and Internet software as well as some Social Media knowledge.

In the course of performing the duties of the Sexual Health Tester it is not unusual to see, engage or be confronted with the following: violence and threats of violence; profane, racists and/or sexist language; bodily fluids; conflict; interactions with First Responders; alcohol and other street drugs; cigarette smoke; death of service participants; nudity of service participants; people involved with sex work; people involve in the drug trade; persons used against their consent, will or knowledge; people in conflict with the law; and/or other situations that may be unsettling. Measures are taken to train staff to appropriately deal with these situations, but those in the position should reasonably expect these types of things to occur and your supervisor must provide appropriate direction and support to these situations.
