This position serves under the direction of credentialed special education staff and/or classroom teachers to perform various tasks that assist the teacher in their duties. The role involves managing and directing intense student behaviors, ensuring a safe, pleasant, professional, and educational atmosphere, and maintaining continuity within the special education program.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist credentialed staff in providing instruction to small groups and individual students in the special education or general education setting
• Perform instructional-related activities such as correcting tests and homework, preparing instructional materials for general and special needs, and assisting the teacher in specialized demonstrations
• Participate in collecting records and data, monitoring and assisting students during classroom activities, and maintaining classroom management
• Assist in implementing positive behavior management strategies and interventions according to established guidelines
• Provide physical support to students with special needs, including lifting, supporting, loading, pushing, steering, and positioning in wheelchairs, and assisting with personal hygiene requirements when necessary
• May be required to provide life-sustaining procedures and specialized health care, including feeding, dispensing medication, tracheotomy, catheterization, tube suctioning, etc., as identified in the assigned student's IEP, 504 plan, or specialized health care plan
• Develop self-help skills, life skills, and ability to do tasks independently in students
Requirements and Qualifications:
• Ability to work effectively one-on-one or with small groups of special needs students
• Experience with behavioral issues and severe and multiple disabilities desired
• Familiarity with MAC and PC operating systems
• At least one year of experience working individually or in small groups with children in an organized setting
• Valid California Motor Vehicle License
