What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Support Specialist position at Lake Bluff School District 65?
- Facilitates classroom, school-wide and emergency/ crisis interventions as needed.
- Maintain channels of communication with administrators, staff members, parents, students, and professionals outside the school to create a sound school experience for children.
- Serve as a member of the Student Services Team and District 65 Threat Assessment Team as individual student needs are assessed and assist in providing interventions for dealing with identified vulnerabilities and crisis support.
- In collaboration with District 65 leadership, enhance resources and support for teachers with trauma informed practices.
- Serve as a liaison between the school district and community resources and agencies.
- As appropriate and with written consent of parent/guardian, communicate with and coordinate student services with outside providers.
- Consult with staff, students, and parents on topics related to executive functioning, classroom management and behavioral supports. Topics may include, but are not limited to social media, health and emotional wellness, trauma informed education, executive functioning, behavioral management techniques, setting expectation and boundaries, etc.
- Actively pursue:
- Opportunities to engage students in informal settings, i.e., field trips, lunchtime/cafeteria, recess, special events, etc.
- Opportunities to evaluate and recommend materials, topics, instructional methods and activities for class meetings, advisory meetings, school wide and classroom behavior management systems.
- Opportunities to co-facilitate problem solving teams and data meetings.
- Maintain appropriate records and reporting for each child requiring intervention.
- Attend appropriate community meetings, professional development seminars, conferences, or in-service programs.
- Maintain communication with other district and village specialists and seek consultation when appropriate.
- As appropriate, perform casework service with parents to increase the parents’ understanding and constructive participation in resolving their child’s concerns, and increase their knowledge and use of appropriate community resources.
- Consult and collaborate with other school personnel in gathering and sharing information regarding specific situations or students, and in establishing and planning respective roles in addressing student and/or parent behaviors.
- Assist the building principal, assistant principal, or school nurse in making necessary home visits.
- Work cooperatively with other staff members and demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, responsible, and serves as a positive role model for co-workers and students.
- Provides consultation to teachers, related service staff members, administrators, parents, and community programs related to social work, as needed.
- Perform attendance and truancy data collection, communication and intervention implementation.
- Participates in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and/or meeting legal requirements.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
- Maintains professional competence through participation in District provided in-service activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to job responsibilities.
- Work cooperatively with other staff members and demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, responsible, and serves as a positive role model for co-workers and students.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Appropriate Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree Board Certified Behavior Analyst or LBSII
- Valid First Aid/CPR Cards preferred
- NCPI or other types of crisis de escalation training preferred, but district can provide training
