Job Description

The Field Officer (Animal Control) investigates mistreatment, abandoned, dangerous, or unattended animals. Assist and support the Lake County Sheriff Department Shelter operations. Report to the Director of Animal Control Shelter.

Duties

  • Investigate reports of animal attacks or animal cruelty, interview witnesses, collect evidence and write reports.
  • Capture and remove stray, uncontrolled, or abused animals from undesirable conditions.
  • Supply animals with food, water, and personal care.
  • Write reports of activities, and maintain files of impoundments and dispositions of animals.
  • Prepare for prosecutions related to animal treatment, and give evidence in court.
  • Examine animals for injuries or malnutrition, and arrange for any necessary medical treatment.
  • Contact animal owners to inform them that their pets are at animal holding facilities.
  • Educate the public about animal welfare and animal control laws and regulations.
  • Clean facilities and equipment such as dog kennels and animal control trucks.
  • Remove captured animals from animal-control service vehicles and place animals in shelter cages or other enclosures.
  • Issue warnings or citations in connection with animal-related offenses, or contact police to report violations and request arrests.
  • Examine animal licenses, and inspect establishments housing animals for compliance with laws.
  • Answer inquiries from the public concerning animal control operations.

Skill, knowledge, and Abilities

Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

Law and Government — Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules.

Public Safety and Security — Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote the effective local, state.

Collaboration skills – Demonstrated ability to work well with people at various levels within the organization.

Education:

High School graduate / GED

Associate Degree or a minimum of 2 years of college from an accredited college. Certify dog trainer/handler (Preferred)

Physical Requirements: This position requires a great deal of standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, crouching, and general mobility. It may include lifting, carrying, and pushing of supplies and cleaning of animals' areas. While performing this job, it will regularly be required to use hands and arms to reach, grasp, and hold animals, supplies, and other tools; to talk and speak clearly to clients and co-workers; and to hear questions and animals. This position requires working safely around unruly, sick, injured, or potentially dangerous animals. This position requires working around and with chemical compounds (i.e., bleach, detergents, and disinfectants) used to clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and other surfaces. While working with shelter animals, there is a risk of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases. Allergic conditions may be aggravated when handling or working with animals or cleaning supplies. Work can occur in an office setting, animal areas, on the facility's grounds, and off-site.

Work Environment: This position is scheduled for five days of work tenure. The schedule varies and may require weekend or evening hours to complete the job and may include working some holidays or overtime, depending on shelter needs. Must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests.
