Job Description
The General Maintenance Worker is part of the Maintenance Team that is responsible for completing routine maintenance repairs, preventative maintenance, and emergency repairs throughout the Jail. Maintenance Team Workers complete alterations, repairs, and general maintenance daily, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, painting, welding, HVAC, and other trade areas.
Duties
Ø Performs general maintenance and routine repairs throughout the Jail.
Ø Operates maintains and performs a routine repair to plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning, and ventilating system and equipment in the Jail.
Ø Performs routine carpentry, painting, or masonry tasks. Assists in repairs, maintenance, and inspection of cell doors, cell bars, bunks, and related security features and equipment.
Ø Assists in routine repairs and maintenance of door locks and devices.
Ø Assists in routine maintenance of kitchen equipment, floors, walls, light fixtures, painting, and other fixtures.
Ø Clears clogged drains and sewer and water lines
Ø Arranges for the acquisition and transport of materials, tools, and equipment to the work sites.
Ø Responsible for escorting outside contractors in the Jail on work projects. Also checks and ensures materials meet job specifications.
Ø Inspects maintenance projects to assure repair work completed by outside contractors is being properly completed.
Ø Ensures that all safety and security standards and precautions are followed in completing maintenance and repair work. Maintain work order documentation to comply with Jail, County, and State of Indiana Corrections Standards
Ø Operates various mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical tools to perform required trade work in the Jail.
Ø Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Skill, knowledge, and Abilities
Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair, and maintenance.
Building and Construction — Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Public Safety and Security — Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
Ability to use tools and equipment of the various trades.
The job requires a good working knowledge of basic Jail security practices and expectations in the areas of tool control, key control, entrance procedures, contraband control, and inmate supervision.
Education:
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, and completion of an apprenticeship in one of the skilled trades, or completion of a trades training program at an accredited community college or trades school.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job, including walking stairs, climbing ladders, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs.

Additional Requirements:
Two (2) years of experience in general maintenance and repair work associated with one or more of the following trade areas: carpentry, electricity, painting, plumbing, masonry, sheet metal work, welding, or related trade.
State Id/Driver’s License
Prior work experience in a correctional facility is preferred.
Experience in preparing written reports
Able to obtain a background check
