Position Title: Family Law Paralegal or Legal Assistant

Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Family Law Paralegal or Legal Secretary to join our team. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and a thorough understanding of family law processes and procedures in Michigan, specifically Ottawa, Kent and Muskegon counties. This position requires someone who can work independently while supporting attorneys and maintaining positive client relationships.
Key Responsibilities:
- Case Management:
- Assist attorneys in managing family law cases from start to finish, including client intake, file organization, and tracking case progress.
- Draft and file pleadings, motions, and other legal documents with the court.
- Document Preparation:
- Prepare legal forms, affidavits, correspondence, and discovery responses.
- Draft initial drafts of divorce decrees, parenting plans, settlement agreements, and other case-specific documents.
- Assemble financial disclosure documents and ensure all necessary information is provided.
- Client Support:
- Serve as a point of contact for clients, keeping them informed about the status of their case.
- Provide empathetic, professional, and clear communication to clients during stressful situations.
- Schedule client meetings, attorney consultations, mediations, and court hearings.
- Court Filings and Deadlines:
- File legal documents electronically or in person with the appropriate court.
- Track and manage deadlines for filings, hearings, and discovery compliance.
- Discovery and Evidence:
- Assist in gathering and organizing documents for discovery purposes, including financial records, emails, and text messages.
- Prepare exhibits for hearings, depositions, and trials.
- Administrative Support:
- Maintain and update case files, both physical and electronic.
- Manage attorney calendars and coordinate scheduling.
- Track and log billable hours for cases.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies or related field, or Paralegal Certification.
- At least 2-5 years of experience as a paralegal, with a focus on family law preferred.
- Strong understanding of family law procedures and requirements in Michigan.
- Proficiency in legal software such as Clio, Microsoft Office Suite, and e-filing systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Empathy, discretion, and professionalism when dealing with sensitive family law matters.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing high-conflict divorce or custody cases.
- Familiarity with legal billing practices and tracking billable hours.
