What are the responsibilities and job description for the Area Vice President of Operations position at Lakeshore Recycling Systems LLC?
The Area Vice President, Operations focuses on building operations expertise and improving operations performance in assigned collection/hauling divisions within the Area. The AVP works with field operations leaders and teammates to ensure durability of standards and processes; this leader plays an essential role in building the capability of the field teams to consistently execute on LRS business plans and budgets and ensure the best experience for the Company’s customers.
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Organizational Leadership
- Develop and execute strategic plans for growth in business volume, profitability, and cash flow.
- Champion and support all LRS safety programs and safe operating practices. Work closely with the Area Safety team to support Company safety initiatives.
- Build and sustain strong business relationships at all levels within the organization and with our customer leaders.
- Lead and manage change initiatives within the business unit to support company goals and drive performance results.
Operations Management
- Improve operational performance for all collection lines of business (commercial, industrial, residential, and portable services) by implementing processes to optimize services, costs, and risk reduction.
- Track KPIs and operational metrics; identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
- Demonstrate commitment to Company standards and best practice operating procedures.
- Collaborate with local site leadership to identify issues, lead root cause analyses, and develop remedial action plans.
- Provide targeted expertise to lead on-site activities to address cultural, process or operational challenges.
Financial Management
- Oversee budgeting and the financial performance of operations; be accountable for the full P&L of the business unit.
- Ensure that the General Managers meet all their financial performance objectives through the development and implementation of sound budgets; manage variances effectively without compromising customer service and hold managers accountable for attaining financial goals.
People & Talent Management
- Coach General Managers, Operations Managers and Supervisors in setting priorities to achieve organizational goals.
- Develop talent and build high performing teams, both managers and individual contributors.
- Work with HR to hire, train, and mentor managers and staff; build Business Unit talent and succession plans.
- Conduct quarterly and annual performance reviews for all direct reports.
- Develop the management team through coaching, development plans and involvement in operations initiatives.
- Create a workplace culture that achieves best in class employee engagement and retention.
Revenue Growth & Market Development
- Define a clear vision and develop a strategic plan for market growth.
- Encourage innovation and creativity within the team to develop new processes or revenue streams that meet market needs.
- Work closely with the field Sales team to drive new business growth and renew existing business.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the market, including customers, partners and industry influencers.
- Develop positive working relationships with community groups and municipalities; actively participate in LRS community engagement efforts
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of operations experience, preferably in the waste industry.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience managing large teams.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Regularly required to talk and hear, both in person and by phone or web meetings.
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to read and interpret data on a computer screen or printed documents.
- Work is performed in an office environment with moderate noise levels, in a climate-controlled environment with heating and air conditioning.
- May be required to move around the work site and may be exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- May be exposed to high noise levels from trucks and machinery while outside typical office setting.
Travel Required:
Travel is required 50% of the time between locations within assigned area, to leadership meetings and other work-related events.
