What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Engineering position at Lam Research?
As the Velocity Lab Director, you will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations and hardware engineering projects in the lab supporting company-wide early phase process feasibility tests. Core responsibilities include:
- Promote a culture of safety in the lab
- Manage and lead the cross functional hardware engineering lab team
- Execute facility planning and organizational development to meet lab vision
- Review project proposals to determine hardware suitability, scope engineering effort, estimate cost and timeline
- Communicate with stakeholders across ATD, etch, dep and CSBG to align project schedules and resources
- Serve as the single point of accountability for lab performance
- Use technical skills and creativity to drive efficient hardware solutions
- Foster collaboration amongst the community of lab users and support teams
- Tailor corporate lab ops policies to meet needs of small, independent R&D lab
- Champion a C&F mindset for the lab:
- Don’t build products; build the minimum hardware set to meet experimental objective
- Move fast and iterate as needed
- Take pride in the experimental result above the equipment used
- Borrow liberally…doesn’t matter if the hardware was “not invented here”
- Use diagnostics to understand and quantify experimental conditions
- Routinely required to make ad-hoc decisions with limited information
- Set budget and track spending for the group
- Education: BS in engineering discipline (mechanical, electrical, chemical); MS/PhD desirable
- Excellent leadership and communication skills; bias to action
- Adaptable, flexible and versatile leader with hardware development experience
- Able to lead & influence hardware team with diverse technical skillset
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
- At least 3 years’ experience in engineering management roles
- Semiconductor capital equipment development experience with etch and deposition product and process knowledge
- Demonstrable experience in successfully leading complex engineering projects
- Technical knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines
- Organization and team development experience
