Desired Qualifications :
Candidates must have a BS degree in Chemistry or a related field with a minimum of 12 semester hours in chemistry and have previous experience in either the production of Deionized water or power plant experience. Prior experience and knowledge of boiler / water analysis are preferred. Previous work experience in a water treatment plant and knowledge and experience in the production of deionized water are also preferred. Experience and competency in the use, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation / equipment, as well as knowledge of proper analytical methods and techniques, are desirable. Previous experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment is preferred. This position requires call-outs and overtime as needed. Candidates must be available for evening or night shifts, overtime, weekend, and holiday work as required. They must also be able to recognize changes in color for titrations. A chemical technician performs technical and analytical services essential to the operation of a fossil fuel power plant. These services include water treatment and chemical analysis of water and wastewater, fuels, coal ash, and petroleum products. The technician provides chemical protection of the steam-generating equipment to minimize outages due to corrosion and deposits in steam cycle components, thereby reducing efficiency loss and the potential need for replacement of steam-generating, condensing, and turbine mechanical components. Additionally, the technician ensures compliance with governmental environmental regulations regarding water discharges and compiles, evaluates, and reports statistical data pertaining to plant performance and productivity. Technicians operate and maintain water treatment plants for the production of demineralized and service water and assist in maintaining an onsite sewage treatment plant. They perform analytical testing of boiler water chemistry and scrubber absorber chemistry.
Responsibilities include the calibration and maintenance of equipment related to these areas and performing minor maintenance activities such as lubrication. Technicians are also required to perform Hazmat team member duties, including respirator qualification, to unload hazardous liquid and gaseous chemicals.
