What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Material Lab Technician position at Landmark Testing & Engineering?
OVERVIEW
Laboratory Technicians are the primary workforce of the laboratory at Landmark Testing and Engineering, whose primary purpose is to complete laboratory testing. Laboratory technicians perform laboratory tests according to ASTM, AASHTO, and other agencies on soils, concrete, and bituminous products. While most of their time is expected to be spent at our primary office in St. George, Lab Technicians are frequently asked to work in mobile laboratories throughout Utah, Arizona, and Nevada as well as site visits where we have active projects.
REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Education or Equivalent
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
· Ability to operate a computer and enter, format, and translate data using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
· Must be able to speak, read, and write English. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
· The Laboratory Technician must be able to use general mathematical skills.
· Must possess the ability to work out of town for up to a week at a time on jobs or certification
· Must have the ability to study and learn specifications and manuals to receive certification during industry-standard exams
Physical Requirements:
- The Laboratory Technician must be able to walk throughout the laboratory, navigating laboratory workbenches, furniture, and equipment.
- Must be able to lift buckets weighing up to 80 pounds with no assistance and help move equipment up to 250 pounds using company-provided jacks or lifts and team effort.
- Must be able to lift 10 pounds repeatedly in a strenuous environment
- Must be able to sit at and work on a computer for extended periods of time.
Physical Body Positions:
- Standing for long periods of time; typically, on concrete floors.
- The position occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, walking, and crouching to transport laboratory-related materials within the laboratory.
- Body Movements: Use of hands, arms, legs, eyes, and voice.
Work Environment
· This position requires working in a construction laboratory environment with moderate to high noise and an abundance of equipment.
· This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with a commitment to meet strict deadlines.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the Laboratory Manager and follows the direction of the Laboratory Manager and Assistant Laboratory Manager.
This position will occasionally be asked to perform duties directly by the Owners.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performing tests in the queue and following priorities set by the Laboratory Manager
- Complete testing reports according to the test standard with the correct project and sample information.
- Performing tests in a manner that allows for multiple processes to flow together and produce as much output as possible.
- After completing testing, clean up the testing equipment and area to a point where additional testing can be completed.
- Work together as a team with other Laboratory Staff to produce test results and communicate needs.
- Work with other Laboratory staff to learn new test methods.
- Work with other Laboratory staff to train new Technicians
- Follow laboratory procedures regarding equipment maintenance, work schedule, workflow expectations, and security.
- Complete out-of-town jobs as required with proper knowledge of job expectation, agency specifications, reporting expectations, and construction schedule.
- Maintain, repair, and make recommendations for the replacement of all laboratory equipment and supplies
- Attend bi-weekly Laboratory Meeting to ensure maximum communication within the laboratory team and take actions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the lab.
- Willing to voice thoughts regarding company processes, systems, and methods to help solve problems.
- Must perform to the best of their ability all other tasks not listed above, assigned at the discretion of the Laboratory Manager or Owners

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
