The Humanities Division offers writing, literature, communication, and language courses to meet the academic goals of Lane’s students. The division comprisesLanguage Studies, Communication Studies, and Writing and Literature. Course offerings include composition, creative writing, technical writing, literature, film as literature, Spanish, Chinuk Wawa, American Sign Language, French, interpersonal communication, group communication, professional communication, cultural communication, and public speaking. The wide variety of courses helps students develop a full range of expressive, interpretive, creative, and communicative skills.

Salary/Compensation Statement:
- The position’s full salary range is $106,717 to $157,967. New employees cannot be placed higher than $115,425 (step 3 on the salary grade) due to internal equity. The application is used to determine the initial salary placement for selected candidates. All employment and education history will be considered.
- Our Management Benefits package includes a generous contribution toward medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability as well as paid sick leave and vacation time.
- Lane Community College is considered a qualifying public employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, full-time employees working at the College may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Three (3) years of increasingly responsible administrative, management, and/or leadership experience in higher education.

Position Purpose:
To fulfill the functions of division leadership and administration in a manner that promotes the quality of student learning, fiscal sustainability, collaboration with other college programs, staff development, and alignment with the College’s strategic directions.
Essential Functions:
- Provides leadership for the division.
- Be an active, collegial, and contributing participant of leadership teams within Academic Affairs, and the college leadership and management teams.
- Establishes and promotes a unified vision for the division as a whole and advocates for the division as an important contributor within the college.
- Provides leadership and collaboration with internal and external division stakeholders including state and regional stakeholder groups related to curricula, educational policy, and articulation with other colleges and universities division disciplines and/or services. May include leadership and oversight of advisory committees.
- Develop, monitor, and/or encourage the negotiation of grants and contracts with potential community partners to generate revenue and enhance services in alignment with division and college strategies.
- Provides leadership for the development of faculty skill in multicultural and diversity-based curricula, and implementation of all diversity initiatives.
- Provides leadership in the areas of program and curriculum development, program assessment and review, program effectiveness and improvement, facilities, and staff development.
- Plans, organizes, administers, develops, and evaluates programs, projects, and activities of assigned division, departments, and programs.
- Provides leadership for, and works collegially with, faculty, staff, and managers, including encouraging change, creativity, and innovation, to offer high quality educational experiences and services for students.
- Identifies future division and program equipment and facility needs, and works to procure funding for these identified needs.
- Supervises, assigns work, and evaluates the performance of assigned faculty, classified staff, and student workers.
- Promotes excellence in division and personnel through the recruitment, selection, development, and recognition of faculty members, classified staff, and student workers
- Acts as hiring manager for the division; establishes and leads committees for search processes; assures compliance with college personnel policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreements, and practices for the employment of faculty, classified staff, student, and temporary or substitute workers.
- Supervises the assessment of instructional program and course outcomes, especially those related to student success, and assures program effectiveness through the development and implementation of an improvement plan based on assessed outcomes; leads and approves the allocation of personnel, responsibility, and priorities for program review.
- Plans for and anticipates changes to programs based upon local and national trends.
- Division authority to set course schedules, modalities, sequencing, teaching assignments, and other instructional areas and other spaces, including any equipment or resource centers, in collaboration with faculty, staff, and managers to ensure that student and program needs are met in alignment with enrollment demands.
- Division authority for division budgets, expenditures, approvals, and priorities; prepares annual budget recommendations with the participation of faculty, staff, and managers; executes assigned budget centers within the guidelines set by the college; sets budget priorities, monitoring, and approvals for the programs and projects within the division.
- Responsible for the maintenance and retention of division records and documentation.
- Division lead in the planning process of the college.
- Division lead in the development of long-range plans, annual goals and objectives, and evaluative measures to ensure the ongoing commitment to quality and excellence.
- Collaborates with appropriate faculty, staff, managers, and regional education leaders to ensure instructional program and course articulation is current and aligned with current transfer and employment partners.
- Reports through established formal channels on how the college’s institutional goals are being achieved.
- Encourages and supports faculty and staff in digital literacy to stay current with changing technology and pedagogy, including distance learning opportunities for rural communities in the college district, and low cost educational resources.
- Advocates for support of programs, faculty, staff, and facilities at the college and in the greater community within available resources.
- Promotes an environment responsive to student needs; addresses and participates in resolving student and faculty issues and complaints; promotes a safe learning and working environment free from harassment, discrimination, intimidation, bullying, or other unprofessional or unlawful behaviors.
- Facilitate and promote K-12 partnerships, including accelerated learning and dual enrollment activities.
- Actively ensure faculty have the necessary support, tools, and resources to conduct assessments of courses, programs, and student achievements.
- Ensure the implementation of the College’s Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunities concerning policies, goals, and timetables in assigned areas. Ensure staff development on diversity, inclusive climate, and respectful learning and working environment issues.
- Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.

Division Essential Functions
- Advocate at the college and in the community for the fundamental importance of the humanities (including literature, languages, communication, writing, and rhetoric) in a democratic society.
- Provide leadership for the assessment and continuous improvement of writing placement, co-requisite courses, and teaching and learning supports to increase student first-year completion of college-level writing
- Lead and facilitate collaboration among Humanities, Adult Basic Skills Education, English as a Second Language, Student Affairs, and other college programs and services to provide students seamless progression in their education
- Lead and facilitate collaboration among Humanities, and Career Technical Education programs, to ensure writing education is relevant and effective for CTE students
- Provide leadership and facilitate partnerships with high schools, universities, advising, and other relevant college departments, to provide clear and smooth student pathways for dual enrollments and transfer in the humanities
- Maintain awareness of current trends and developments in division fields.
- In collaboration with the Center for Accessible Resources, provide and support access for students and staff with disabilities.
- Support and promote division activities and events.
- Support faculty in developing and implementing innovative, inclusive, and effective pedagogies and curricula.

Supervision Statement:

Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works mostly indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes long hours of computer work, and also includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive work for more than six (6) hours a day. This position may work with individuals who may be confrontational. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work Safely.
