LIBRARIAN/MEDIA SPECIALIST
QUALIFICATIONS:
As set by state certification authorities (type of certification)
Bachelor’s degree or above from accredited college or university
REPORTS TO: Principal
SUPERVISES: Students and staff members designated by the Board or the superintendent
JOB GOAL: To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Identify, select or develop short- and long-range goals and objectives for the media program based on student, faculty, and curriculum needs.
- Collaborate with teachers and instructional leaders for the integration of media/information skills into the school program.
- Plan and coordinate the acquisition of materials to enhance learning consistent with the needs of students with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, learning styles and special needs according to the system strategic plan and school improvement plan.
- Develop and implement Library/Media Plan and procedures necessary for the efficient and effective operation of the media center.
- Administer the media center budget based on program goals and objectives.
- Maintain complete and accurate records as they pertain to the Media Center as required by law, system policy and administrative regulations.
- Provide for use of current technologies.
- Facilitate the use, maintenance, repair, inventory of all media center materials and equipment, organize resources, to allow easy access to information and services.
- Solicit ongoing feedback from members of the school staff regarding the availability, use and impact of media materials.
- Establish a system of records that will provide an appropriate database for evaluating the use and distribution of the media collection and supporting materials and equipment.
- Teach library media skills in collaboration with teachers to support classroom instruction.
- Instruct staff and students in the use of resources, services, equipment, and technology.
- Use appropriate techniques and strategies to enhance the application of critical, creative and evaluative thinking capabilities.
- Use appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet the learning needs of all students.
- Apply principles of learning and effective teaching in instructional delivery.
- Collaborate with teachers to support instructional goals and objectives.
- Collaborate with school staff in overall school curriculum planning and development.
- Maintain contact with other library, education, and information agencies.
- Provide assistance to school staff with professional resources.
- Update professional skills and knowledge and keep abreast of recent developments in education, technology and media by attending assigned professional development activities.
- Conduct a media services program in a manner that ensures student growth/achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area and/or student program classification.
- Provide appropriate educational opportunities for students to meet their unique needs, talents, interests, and abilities.
- Provide technical support to students and staff.
- Coordinate annual book fairs if needed.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
- Dresses and conducts oneself in a professional manner.
- Works with colleagues to enhance school climate and overall academic program.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Nine (9)months unless otherwise determined by the board. Salary and work year to be established by the board.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel and as directed by the Alabama State Department of Education personnel evaluation requirements.
