LANGLADE COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION

HIGHWAY WORKER

Department: Highway

Reports to: Patrol Superintendent and/or Highway Commissioner

Grade/Wage: Grade 15, $23.00-29.00/hour

FLSA Status/Hours: Non-Exempt, 40 Hours per week

The Langlade County Highway Worker is the position for you! Responsibilities include operating a dump truck to plow snow and haul materials, manual labor associated with the road construction and maintenance and potentially operating a skid steer, grader, and front-end loader.

Hours: 6:00 am-4:00 pm, Monday-Thursday, with a short-paid lunch period.

Ability to respond to calls to work at any time of day or night, especially with winter storms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily and in a timely manner. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • Operate a dump truck to plow snow and haul materials.
  • Potential to operate equipment such as grader, skid steer, and front-end loader.
  • Cutting brush and trees, shoveling construction material, handling rocks, installing geo-fabric and snow fence.
  • Vehicle maintenance including greasing, oil change, washing, etc.
  • Working as part of a paving crew, brushing crew, crack-sealing crew, gravel-crushing crew, etc.
  • Operating various small tools and power equipment, including chain saws, blowers, pumps, generators, shovels, rakes, and trimmers.
  • General maintenance in and around shop facilities including mowing lawn, shoveling snow, painting, and miscellaneous carpentry.
  • Janitorial and cleaning duties such as sweeping, handling garbage, cleaning shop areas, break rooms and bathrooms.

Education and/or Experience;

High school diploma or equivalent required. Must possess and maintain a valid CDL with A & B endorsements.

Preferred Qualifications:

Technical or Vocational degree from an accredited college in roadway construction/maintenance, heavy equipment operation, building construction, truck driving or an apprenticeship program in one of the cited trades. One (1) year of experience in roadway construction/maintenance, heavy equipment operation, building construction, or truck driving.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use/learn to use equipment and tools utilized for highway construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to organize work and develop work procedures with minimum supervision.

Technological Skills:

Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit.
  • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • The employee must have the ability and stamina to travel long distances on foot over sometimes difficult terrain in all types of weather.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
