Who we are: The Lansing Lugnuts, the High-A affiliate of the Athletics and member club of Diamond Baseball Holdings (DBH)
Job Description: The Assistant Groundskeeper answers directly to the Head Groundskeeper and is responsible for the overall upkeep and maintenance of the playing surface and providing a field that complies with the specifications, high quality and safety standards, set forth by Major League baseball. The club is looking for a recent graduate and/or an experienced turf assistant looking to build their expertise in athletic field management, specifically within the baseball industry.
Job Duties: All applicants should be able to work in a fast-paced professional environment. Applicants are expected to possess the necessary skills to carry out daily tasks while working both independently and with others on a professional baseball field, while representing the Lansing Lugnuts and Minor League Baseball to the highest standards.
Other duties include but are not limited to:
Assist in executing all field operations including, but not limited to, turf management, fertilization, clay work, mound preparation, warning track maintenance, and infield surface maintenance.
Prepare the playing field for practice on game days and help facilitate the set-up and breakdown of all practice equipment, including batting cage, screens, turf mats.
Assist in the maintenance of the playing surface in a high quality and efficient manner to effectively facilitate the daily practice, pre-game and in-game schedule.
Assist in the maintenance as well as learning different techniques in proper moisture management to surface of play, i.e., clay.
Assist with daily and pre-game field preparations and repair, i.e., painting, watering, dragging, batting practice setup/teardown.
Assist with in-game responsibilities, i.e., dragging, base-change, tarp pulls
Assist with post-game field and turf maintenance, i.e., mounds, plates area, baselines, infield, etc.
Assist in oversight of tarp usage and monitoring weather conditions to protect the field as needed.
Operate and maintain grounds equipment.
Assist in training and supervising part-time game day field maintenance personnel.
Represents the Club in a positive and professional manner at all times.
Other duties as determined by the Head Groundskeeper
Qualifications:
Candidates graduated from a 2- or 4-year Turf Program is preferred, but not necessary.
Prior knowledge and experience of working on a baseball field is also preferred.
The individual must be highly motivated, self-initiative and able to work in fast-paced situations as well as be able and willing to work as part of a team.
Must be able to work long, flexible hours which will include mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.
Work in various weather conditions
Be able to lift at least 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
