In addition to our classrooms, our relationship based and trauma-informed programs include adventure-based therapeutic experiences such as day trips, camping, art, and so much more.

Job Summary:

The Academic Instructor will provide instruction in one or more content areas, utilizing best practices in assessment and instruction.

Essential Duties:

Administrative/Educational:

  • Develop and deliver classroom and field based curriculum, based on current best practices utilizing a variety of medium including technology, project based learning, differentiated instruction and the concepts of universal designs for learning.
  • Develop and submit substitute plans to supervisor.
  • Provide daily leadership, support and direction to home room staff and students.
  • Create and maintain daily, weekly and quarterly plans and schedules.
  • Collaborate and team teach to develop and deliver academics and therapeutic strength based activities from beginning to end of day.
  • Evaluate student progress, records results, and prepares grades and commentary to inform parents of progress. Participates in statewide and formal assessments as required.
  • Review student file for familiarity with Individualized Education Plans, learning abilities and other possible disabilities. Implement accommodations and goals from Individualized Educational Plans and Comprehensive Evaluations.
  • Collaborate with other staff to meet academic and treatment needs of students.
  • May design, implement and coordinate individualized learning plans based on student needs and interests
  • Lead and/or collaborate with school wide cornerstone curriculum activities and develop related curriculum strands for students.
  • Participate in student team meetings to update team on academic progress, as requested.
  • Actively participate in Laraway School and agency meetings, trainings, events, etc.
  • Complete all related program specific, agency related and regulatory paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Demonstrate and model respect for Laraway Youth and Family Services property and equipment.
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships and appropriate boundaries with staff, clients and community.

Coordination:

  • Coordinate, delegate, organize and assist in the oversight of team and school-wide planning for individuals, teams and school-wide activities.
  • Modeling, communicating and training best practices for areas of expertise.
  • Participate in ongoing screening, selection and orientation of new staff.
  • Model collaborative team planning and problem solving.
  • Facilitating meetings and debriefing team activities.
  • Developing and engaging staff in planning and carrying out team activities.

Academic, Therapeutic, and Behavior Services:

  • Strive at all times to foster a positive approach to problem solving and maintain a positive environment.
  • Model and utilize best practices in education and special education when working one-on-one or in small groups.
  • Develop and maintain trauma informed best practices: connection, building relationships, naming emotions, co-regulation, empathy, acceptance, congruence, presence, and attunement.
  • Maintain awareness of own affect, posture, body language, and complexity and tone of language.
  • Staff should be comfortable asking for a break and peers comfortable subbing staff out and letting staff know they can step in and give a break.
  • Participate in on going evaluations and reviews of Individual Plan of Care (IPC), Individual Education Plan, and Positive Behavior Support Plans (CLEAR – Challenge, Logic, Emotions, Actions and Results) and support student in understanding of these plans and supports.
  • Become familiar with students’ academic abilities and disabilities, treatment needs and behavior plans in accordance with their Individual Education and Treatment Plan.
  • Track and report student progress and staff interventions toward treatment goals using daily data sheets, daily CERT (Concurrent Education Rehabilitation and Treatment notes, daily communication with peers and leaders, SIR’s (Serious Incident Reports), and in team and treatment meetings.
  • Engage with youth using replacement behaviors, sensory breaks while maintaining calm body, calm voice.
  • Support students throughout the day with behavioral situations and academic tasks both on and off campus.
  • Anticipate behavior, recognize the need for therapeutic intervention and implement strategies per individualized plan.
  • Maintain focus on the student at all times and engage to support student’s emotional and academic needs.
  • Monitor student behavior per student plan and ensure the safety and wellbeing of students at all times
  • Implement safety strategies, calming activities, sensory and/or redirection to positive activity, safe space, environmental changes, change of staff (if possible), seek support of others as needed.
  • Utilize staff, systems, and physical area as de- escalation, redirection, upregulating and or down regulating: art room, projects, walking or working outside, swing sets, music room etc.

The position requires using therapeutic communication, experiential learning and strength based strategies to provide opportunities for youth to make positive choices, gain self-confidence, advance their academic skills and learn skills critical to their lifelong development.

  • A strong sense of professionalism is required.
  • The person shall present themselves as a strong role model for children and adolescents and demonstrate management and supervision of students in accordance with program policies, philosophies and mission.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and privacy of those seeking services, with peers, on and off site, and in all forms of communication.

Off-Campus Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate all vehicles in a safe manner and in accordance with motor vehicle laws · Provide support as needed across settings.
  • Provide direct instruction as needed.
  • Be prepared for crisis situation in the community—school and emergency contact information, first aid kit, face sheets, and de-escalation plan for each student · Present and conduct yourself as a representative of Laraway Youth and Family Services.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Elementary Teaching Licensure is required.
  • Valid driver’s license, excellent driving record, and access to safe, reliable, insured, inspected vehicle
  • Successful Criminal Background Check

The following certifications are preferred and if not current must be pursued during employment

  • Ability to complete Handle with Care, Part 1 and Part 2, certifications and maintain.
  • Ability to complete and maintain medical Handle with Care training and medication protocols.
  • First Aid & CPR certification

Work/Physical Requirements:

Given the at-risk population served, the position requires ongoing training and preparedness in the execution of physical restraint techniques. This may require running to catch a child. The “Handle with Care” training program we utilize articulates that individuals with back and neck limitations are likely to be hampered in the execution of the protocols and greatly increases risk to harm to self or student.

  • Ability to engage youth in physical activities such hiking, outdoor sports, etc. ·
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
