Job Summary: (Essential Functions)
The Larchmont Yacht Club is seeking experienced and passionate Sailing Coaches to lead our summer 2025 Junior Sailing Program. Coaches will work with a diverse group of sailors across multiple classes, including Optis, Fevas, C420s, and Lasers. Our program, with a legacy of producing lifelong sailors, engages 230 sailors, 25 Junior Instructors (JIs), and 25 Coaches. Coaches will be responsible for instructing sailors of various skill levels, supervising on-water activities, and collaborating with fellow coaches on curriculum development to foster skill advancement and sportsmanship.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a large program with opportunities for private coaching and leadership roles. Coaches can participate in Z420 Team Racing events and weekly practices as part of their own skill development. Successful applicants will report to the Sailing Director and be required to attend instructor week, Junior Commissioning, and all Larchmont Yacht Club Junior Race Week events.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Instruct and mentor junior sailors, ranging from beginners to advanced racers, in Optis, C420s, Fevas, Lasers, or Big Boats.
- Supervise on-water activities, drills, and races, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.
- Collaborate with the coaching team to develop and implement effective training programs tailored to various skill levels.
- Provide constructive feedback to sailors to help improve their technique and performance.
- Oversee the maintenance and care of sailing equipment, coach boats, and program facilities.
- Serve as a role model for Junior Instructors, promoting sportsmanship, leadership, and professionalism.
About our Program
- Instructors will be required to attend instructor week, Junior Commissioning and all Larchmont Yacht Club Junior Race Week Events
- Instructors who excel will be given opportunities to coach private lessons and coach at away regattas
- Qualified instructors can apply to be lead instructors. This is a leadership role. Lead instructors will decide the curriculum, drills and oversee for their class.
Qualifications
Licenses and Special Requirements
- US Sailing Level 1 certification or higher (international equivalents considered).
- Safe Sport certification.
- Valid New York state boating license or a reciprocal state license (international equivalents considered).
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- US Sailing or US Power boating Safe Powerboat Handling certification (international equivalents considered).
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor both sailors and Junior Instructors.
- Ability to expertly operate a powerboat and manage on-water safety.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Must be able to comply with the Club's policies and procedures
- Must be able to lift 50lbs or more
- Work evenings and weekend days as assigned
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Working on weekends is required as assigned
Compensation:
Compensation is based on experience and includes an hourly salary, private lesson opportunities, and overtime pay.
Pay range: $18.50 to $26.50 per hour.
