Larimer County
Taft, CO Other
POSTED ON 4/3/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/3/2025
The Solid Waste Department is looking for a Landfill Worker I to join our team!

The Solid Waste Department is looking for motivated individuals for entry-level landfill labor positions who are ready to work in a physically demanding, outdoor environment. This role involves tasks like assisting with waste disposal, site cleanup, and supporting heavy equipment operations, all while following strict safety protocols. It’s an essential job that contributes to the smooth operation of the landfill and ensures compliance with environmental regulations. As the department expands with a new transfer station and landfill under construction, there will be significant opportunities for growth, including training in heavy equipment operation, advancement to higher positions, and long-term career development within the solid waste industry.

The typical schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Starting in 2026, with the launch of the new Transfer and Landfill operations, schedule adjustments will be implemented, including opportunities for rotating Saturday shifts.
What you'll be doing:
  • Directing traffic on-site to ensure safe and efficient flow.
  • Screening waste to identify and remove hazardous materials from the landfill.
  • Operating various equipment, including pickup trucks, tractors, mowers, vacuum trailers, and vacuum litter machines.
  • Collecting and disposing of litter by hand.
  • Performing general maintenance of landfill facilities, such as the shop, fences, and buildings.

  • Ability to identify and properly handle various types of waste while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn how to operate small tools and equipment, such as compactors, pressure washers, and hand tools.
  • Dependability in arriving on time, completing tasks efficiently, and maintaining a clean and well-organized landfill site.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing tasks, site conditions, and a desire to learn new skills, including heavy equipment operation and waste management practices.

To move forward in the hiring process, candidates must meet the required minimum qualifications. That said, we encourage you to think about your unique background and skills before applying. People often underestimate how their experiences match up with a role’s needs. We encourage you to apply if you meet the minimum qualifications and believe your skills and perspective can add value to this position.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of required pre-employment checks or testing.

Landfill labor is physically demanding, requiring employees to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. The job involves lifting, shoveling, and moving heavy materials regularly, as well as standing, walking, and operating equipment for extended periods. Safety is a top priority, and workers must adhere to strict safety protocols while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), such as steel-toed boots, gloves, high-visibility vests, and hard hats. Maintaining awareness of surroundings is essential to prevent accidents involving large equipment and vehicles.

In addition to physical labor, employees must follow proper waste handling and disposal methods to comply with environmental regulations and minimize contamination. Teamwork and effective communication are critical in landfill operations, as laborers collaborate with equipment operators, supervisors, and other staff to ensure smooth daily operations. Clear communication helps coordinate tasks and respond to any issues or emergencies on-site.

Landfill labor positions also offer opportunities for growth and learning. Employees can gain experience in heavy equipment operation, such as bulldozers and compactors, and develop a deeper understanding of waste management practices. With training and experience, laborers have the potential to advance into higher-level roles, such as equipment operators or supervisors.

All application components must be submitted by 11:59 PM MT on the closing date listed.
