SOMMELIER JOB DESCRIPTION
Wine Stewards / Sommeliers are responsible for the selling and serving of bottled wine. A Sommelier will possess a current Sommelier certification.
Essential Functions
Order and sell wine for the restaurantAvailable to work a variety of hours, days and shifts, including weekendsSafely and effectively use and operate all necessary tools and equipmentAbility to effectively communicate in order to perform and follow job requirements in written and spoken directionAbility to multi-task calmly and effectively in a busy, stressful environmentWork in a confined, crowded space of variable noise and temperature levelsAble to move and lift up to 10 pounds, frequently move and / or lift up to 25 pounds, and occasionally move and / or lift up to 50 poundsAbility to stand and walk for an entire shift and move safely through all areas of the restaurant, which may include stairs, uneven or slick surfacesKey Responsibilities and Duties
Ensure the overall guest experience exceeds expectations and anticipates guests’ needsGreet guests with a warm, sincere smileUse tact and good judgement when dealing with guest challenges and respond to guest needs with patience and courtesyDevelop the wine menu for the restaurantCoordinate all ordering of wine for the restaurantMaintain professional relationships with purveyors, and must not accept gifts or cash in return for wine or liquor ordersAccount for and maintain the security of all wine inventoriesProvide wine education and training for new and existing employees, and update training materialsConduct wine tastingsAssist Maître d’ and / or host with greeting and seating guests if neededOrganize, maintain and restock wines in proper cabinets, coolers or storage areasAttend wine seminars on a regular basisAct as a lead for the Wine Runner positionFollow proper wine service proceduresAssist serving staff with selling, opening and serving wineAccurately record and account for all items ordered, process payments, and balance all sales / receipts in compliance with restaurant policies and proceduresUnderstand and respond knowledgeably to questions about the restaurant and menuUse sales techniques to present and encourage current promotions to guestsUnderstand and follow the food allergy procedure and special orders / restrictionsProficiency in the use and operation of all necessary tools and equipment, including the POS systemComply with all safety and sanitation guidelines and proceduresSuccessfully complete alcohol awareness trainingFollow all rules, policies, procedures and conditions of employment, including those outlined in the Employee HandbookGet along well with others and be a team playerOther duties will be assigned as needed
