The Multi-Specialty Surgical Coder is responsible for accurately coding a wide range of surgical procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT codes. This role requires a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and coding guidelines across multiple surgical specialties.
Multi-Specialty Surgical Coder Responsibilities:
- Review surgical documentation (operative reports, progress notes, etc.) to identify all procedures performed
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes, adhering to coding regulations
- Abstract key information from medical records for accurate coding and billing
- Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies
- Stay current with coding updates and regulatory changes
- Identify and report coding errors or inconsistencies
- Participate in coding audits and quality assurance activities
- Maintain a high level of coding accuracy and productivity
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Multi-Specialty Surgical Coder Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or relevant coursework preferred
- Current and active certification from AAPC (e.g., CPC, COC, CCS-P) or AHIMA (e.g., CCS)
- Proven experience coding surgical procedures across multiple specialties
- Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Familiarity with various surgical procedures
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR) and practice management software
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively
- Willingness and ability to successfully complete a coding assessment
