JOB SUMMARY : The Area Coordinator is one of the professional staff members who comprise the staff of the Office of Residential Life. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Area Coordinator serves as a live-in, student development professional whose primary responsibility is the oversight of a specific residential area, where the Area Coordinator will facilitate all aspects of the residential experience for the students residing therein. The Area Coordinator must be able to work both independently and collaboratively.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Residential Operations

  • Oversee daily operations for an assigned residential area of up to 400 beds. This includes managing student concerns, community events, student-staff supervision, facility issues, public safety, and damage billing.
  • Cultivate a healthy living-learning environment through intentional programming, policy enforcement, and fostering community engagement.
  • Assume leadership in a specific functional area, such as; Curriculum, Programming, RA Staff Selection & Training, Technology & Operations, or University Conduct System.
  • Collaborate with key departments like Facilities, Campus Police, and Housing Operations to ensure a safe and functional residential experience.
  • Maintain accurate housing records and assist in operational tasks such as room assignments, lock changes, and building transitions.

2. On-Call Responsibilities

  • Serve as the on-call administrator for after-hours staff management and crisis response.
  • Address, document, and follow up on emergency situations within the residential community.
  • 3. Student Conduct

  • Act as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the University's conduct system.
  • Educate students about campus policies and community standards.
  • Conduct hearings for student policy violations to uphold campus accountability.
  • 4. Supervision

  • Directly supervise 10-15 undergraduate Resident Assistants (RAs).
  • Guide and evaluate RA programming efforts and conduct regular team meetings and individual one-on-one sessions.
  • Support RAs' professional development within a student development framework.
  • Additional Functions

  • Uphold confidentiality, professional protocols, and university policies.
  • Participate in department and divisional meetings, training sessions, and summer housing functions.
  • Contribute to institutional committees and initiatives as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Tier Structure

    This is a Tier 1 - fully on-campus position, with live-in responsibilities, requiring daily in-person interactions with students and other departments.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED BY THE JOB :

    Minimum Education level :

    Bachelor's degree and one to three years of residential experience in the college / university setting required; preferred candidates will have a master's degree in a related field (student development, counseling or higher education), and direct experience in college / university residential management and programming, and working with diverse student populations.

    Computer skills : Microsoft Office; competence or ability to learn to use databases and other forms of electronic communication. Office utilizes software platforms including The Housing Director (THD), Guardian, Power Campus, and Canvas.

    Other Requirements of the Job :

    On call duty requires the ability to travel throughout the campus, including all floors of residences, most of which do not have elevators. Preferred candidates must enjoy working in a high-traffic, fast-paced environment. Demonstrate cultural competency with diverse groups, anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts, provide quality customer service to our residents. All candidates must have a commitment to student development; the ability to lead and develop staff; excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently; and an understanding of, and the ability to apply, student development and learning outcomes theories. Team and cross department collaborations are essential along with the ability to work independently.
