At Lawrence & Associates, Attorneys are managers. They not only are expected to competently and efficiently manage their case load, but also to compassionately and effectively manage the projects and work assigned to one or more paralegals and law clerks. As a result, and attorney should always conduct him- or her-self in a way that sets an example for other employees to follow, in every aspect of an attorney’s job. Perhaps the most important designation in Lawrence & Associates is “Responsible Attorney” for a given matter, which signifies that you have taken control of a client’s legal issue and bear a duty to see it completed successfully to the greatest extent of your abilities.
Day to day job duties as they relate to case planning and development, include but are not limited to: interviewing and meeting with clients; gathering facts; requesting documentation; drafting and analyzing legal documents; making and receiving phone calls; collecting, compiling, and utilizing technical information; meeting all deadlines and requirement imposed by the court or administrative body with jurisdiction over the case, and; meeting or exceeding all ethical and professional responsibility requirements imposed by a relevant supreme court or bar associations. Lawrence & Associates is a small law firm that fosters a team atmosphere.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) Degree: Possession of a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Bar Admission: Admission to the KY state bar, OH would be a plus.
- Specialization in PI Law: Specialization or demonstrated expertise in personal injury law, specifically in litigation is required.
- Minimum 2 Years of Experience: While not mandatory, a minimum of 2 years of experience in the practice area is preferred.
- Understanding of State-Specific PI Laws: Comprehensive knowledge of state-specific personal injury laws and regulations.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Draft legal documents, formal discovery requests, formal discovery responses, notices, interrogatories, motions, memoranda, deposition summaries, medical record summaries, and letters. Some documents will be in the form of templates pre-created by Lawrence & Associates, while others require original drafting.
· Proofreading, Review, and Editing. For anything originally drafted by the attorney, the firm expects the attorney to proofread the work, including checks for proper spelling, grammar, and formatting. Similarly, the attorney will often assign drafting tasks to law clerks, paralegals or administrative staff. The responsible attorney must proofread, review, and/or edit the work produced by other staff members to the extent required so that no staff member practices law without a license, and so that Lawrence & Associates’ work always maintains a high standard of professionalism.
· Prepare for, and attend, hearings and depositions. While it may be axiomatic to say that attorneys will sometimes be required to go to hearings or attend depositions, it is also incumbent upon attorneys to fully and completely prepare for hearings and depositions. The attorney’s highest level of skill should be brought to bear on each hearing or deposition, regardless of the case size or type.
· Personal Injury: Understand, summarize, and utilize medical records. While attorneys are rarely responsible for requesting medical records, attorneys are expected to read and know how to summarize medical records. Further, because medical records and billing are the backbone of any injury case, attorneys must know how to use the medical records to prove damages and/or coverage in their given practice area.
