What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer/Designer, GSE position at LEAP?
Your Mission
You will develop the ground support equipment from fluid handling rigs and rocket transport cradles to test stands and launch pad infrastructure. Working alongside our Test and Launch team, you will leverage first-principles engineering and CAD proficiency to ensure each GSE asset meets stringent safety and operational standards.
How You Will Make An Impact
- Conceptualize and Design GSE Solutions: From preliminary sketches to detailed 3D models, develop mechanical systems that support test, transport and launch operations
- Perform Mechanical Feasibility Checks: Use fundamental calculations and occasionally FEA to validate structural adequacy of weldments, frames, or linkages before fabrication
- Coordinate with Manufacturing: Supply clear part drawings, material specs, and acceptance criteria to internal assembly teams and external fabricators, and address DFM and other feedback promptly
- Document and Hand Off: Provide user manuals and operational notes to technicians for installation, operation, or maintenance of the GSE solutions
What You Bring to the Team
- 5 years of experience in designing mechanical systems or industrial equipment, ideally in the aerospace industry or similarly high-stakes environment (heavy machinery, oil & gas)
- Proficiency in CAD (preferably NX) and mastery of GD&T principles
- Strong background in structural and mechanical design of load-bearing equipment and weldments
- Experience with various fabrication methods and ability to produce DFM/DFA compliant designs and drawings
- Strong collaborative style, being comfortable iterating with technicians, test and other engineers, to refine design on-the-fly
- Willingness to travel occasionally to test/launch sites
Bonus Points
- Direct exposure to rocket test stands or fluid handling solutions (cryogenic or high-pressure lines)
- Experience applying ASME, AWS and AISC and other relevant standards for designing structures and weldments
- Experience in piping system and pressure equipment design according to ASME B31.3 and Sec VIII codes
- Knowledge of motion control systems (pneumatics, hydraulics, etc.)
