About the role:
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The KidsPlay Coordinator works to design, implement and evaluate high-quality daily physical activity in all LEARN programs and area-wide competitive sports leagues for low-income youth. Ensures that physical activity programming meets the needs of the community and the mission and core values of the organization. Works with the Manager of Curriculum & Staff Development to identify best practices in methods, drives the selection of rigorous, standards-aligned, and culturally relevant physical activity curriculum, and provides direction for how engaging physical activity best occurs in school/community-based programs. Supports the content and youth development knowledge, coaching development, and evaluation of all LEARN front-line staff for physical activity implementation, including Coordinators. Responsibilities also include game day coordination and supervision, program planning, curriculum development, monitoring program participation, and ensuring all logistical needs are met for KidsPlay leagues. Under supervision from the Director of Programs, the KidsPlay Coordinator works closely with LEARN staff, school staff, parents, and students to ensure that programming meets the needs of the school and its students as well as the policies of the funding entities.
The KidsPlay Coordinator spends a portion of his/her time working in the LEARN office on duties related to program planning and pre-game day coordination. The remainder of the time is spent implementing the program, observing and coaching KidsPlay coaches and front-line staff in their performance around physical activity implementation, and managing game day activities at program sites.
What you'll do:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads the ongoing design, planning, delivery and assessment of the physical activity components of all LEARN programs that meets program participant needs and is age-appropriate, standards-aligned, and consistent with the organization’s mission, core values and yearly goals;
- Works with the Director of Programs and Manager of Curriculum & Staff Development to plan, implement and evaluate an annual KidsPlay Program Plan that includes organization-wide and program-specific Goals and Objectives;
- Works with the Manager of Curriculum & Staff Development to select rigorous, standards-aligned, and culturally relevant physical activity curriculum, and provide direction for how physical activity learning best occurs in schools and expanded learning programs;
- Plan and implement all components of the KidsPlay competitive sports leagues, including coordinating player recruitment, coaches’ clinics, game schedules and tournaments, officiating, transportation, and game day facilities and equipment;
- Develop and implement program and sports league rules and guidelines, curriculum and staff training for KidsPlay (both competitive and non-competitive activities);
- Collaborate with Site Coordinators and Supervisors regarding team and player recruitment and league schedule development to ensure goals are met and league activities do not conflict with other LEARN programming;
- Develop and foster positive relationships and facilitate communications between LEARN staff, students, parents, coaches, and school administrators regarding KidsPlay activities;
- Plan and coordinate the program with input from school administration, students, parents, and other stakeholders via participation in Advisory Boards/Councils;
- Develop staffing plan to implement the program, including all coaches, referees and volunteers needed;
- Supervise KidsPlay coaches, including recommendations for hiring, performance monitoring and evaluation, and providing direct input to staff disciplinary decisions;
- Monitor expenses on a regular basis to ensure that the program costs remain within the program budget;
- Work with school staff, parents, and students to recruit and retain students in programming;
- Ensure that Coaches record their time and submit all required paperwork accurately and timely;
- Monitor the collection of registration forms, fees, and other KidsPlay documents;
- Maintain inventory of all KidsPlay equipment and uniforms, including monitoring the distribution and collection of said items at the beginning and end of every season;
- Assist with and/or attend on-site Spirit Week activities, end-of-season banquets, and/or awards ceremonies;
- Monitor student attendance, distribute and collect evaluation instruments, and complete annual program performance reports; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- A Bachelor’s Degree, or, four years of experience working with youth in an educational setting. Education and experience can combine for the 4 years (i.e. AA and 2 years of experience);
- Experience participating as a player in any competitive sport league(s);
- Experience coordinating sports clinics, leagues, tournaments and other sports competitions is highly desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Ability to pass a district examination for instructional assistants;
- Knowledge of physical education and sports activities;
- Interest in working with at-risk youth to help them achieve their highest potential;
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with students, parents, school staff and other stakeholders;
- Ability to effectively supervise and manage the performance of coaching staff;
- Ability to work as part of a team and act as a positive role model for students;
- Ability to understand the needs and differences of children;
- Ability to balance emotional support and discipline to deal with child behavior issues;
- Excellent organizational and managerial skills, attention to details, and sound judgment.
LANGUAGE & COMPUTER SKILLS
Strong writing skills. Competence and comfort with computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and web-based communication tools, such as e-mail and Internet. Ability to speak Spanish is desired.
PHYSICAL SKILLS
Requires the visual acuity to observe the activity of children and others. Must be able to lift and carry small loads (up to 25 lbs.) and stand for prolonged hours.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must complete Live Scan Department of Justice and FBI Criminal Background Check and obtain health clearance (TB Test).
Condition of Employment & Benefits:
This is a regular full-time, benefited, non-exempt (hourly) position. Hours of work will vary but not to exceed 40 hours per week. This position requires the candidate to be available for work during KidsPlay program hours, generally Monday – Friday (1:00 – 6:00 PM) and some Saturdays.
The pay range for this role is:
25 - 25 USD per hour(LEARN)
