This posting is for a full time position from June 23- August 15 with some required training June 18-20
Do you want to spend your summer teaching and learning alongside rising 3rd-12th graders in Missoula, Montana? Learning With Meaning is looking to hire three summer camp counselors for our Innovate camp program. In the innovate camp between indoor activities such as programming and robot building and being outdoors.
Our goal is to help kids pursue their interest in STEM as well as maintain a connection with the outdoors. Counselors will be trained in various STEM concepts such as basic programming; rules of the FLL and FTC robotics competitions; how to assemble various projects such as small motors, popsicle-stick crossbows, paper-plate speakers, and more; basic breadboard circuits; and Lego/REV robotics mechanics and sensors/components. You will work with a group of up to 8 students. You will oversee these various STEM activities, supervise and lead outdoor activities, oversee free choice time, and spend time wading and playing in the river. If this sounds like an amazing way to spend your summer AND get paid, then you are the right person for this job!
Our Innovate summer camp consists of four week-long camps, repeated twice each over the course of 8 weeks.
Projectiles
In this camp we spend the week building, investigating, and playing with various projectiles projects. Counselors will lead campers in programming games in Scratch; building small-scale ballistic devices; and demonstrating/playing with potato guns, baking soda/vinegar rockets, and more.
Robotics
In this camp counselors will lead campers in learning the skills necessary to create all kinds of robots using Lego Mindstorms and Lego Wedo 2.0. Counselors will teach the coding (similar to Scratch), building, and problem solving skills required to build fun and interesting robot projects.
FLL/FTC
Every year, middle schoolers around the country compete in the First Lego League to build lego robots that complete in an array of challenges. In this camp we allow campers to see the retired gameboards and teach them what it takes to be competitive in the competition. These robots can vary from simple to very complex. Counselors will teach basic programming, sensors, motors, gears, and more
.
Oftentimes these Lego League alum move on to a similar, yet more advanced competition in the First Tech Challenge. This is a more open-ended style of competition. Counselors will help our older/more capable campers assemble a kit robot in FTC style from a set of instructions. This kit robot uses Rev Robotics parts such as aluminum extrusions, 5.5 mm bolts and nuts, angled brackets, motors, servos, etc. You will help them learn to program (block style programming) and drive the robots after assembly.
Engineering Adventures
This camp will challenge campers to think like an engineer! Bridge building, daily engineering challenges, linear motion, earthquake simulators, egg drop, and more, this camp has it all! Counselors will assist students through various projects design that build upon each other throughout the week.
Counselor skillset: Enthusiasm for and some experience working with youth is required. A background in outdoor education in some capacity would be helpful but it is not required. Experience or even expertise in the areas of electrical engineering, programming, robotics, Arduinos, or building things that throw/launch other things into the air are a big plus, though not required. You must LOVE learning new things and problem solving as well as sharing your approach to both with others. Over the summer, your skills will grow and you'll be able to teach skills more and more to your campers.
