Lee County Library System, a dynamic, forward-thinking organization, is offering enthusiastic, community-minded candidates the opportunity to become a part of the team at the North Fort Myers Public Library. As a Youth Services Librarian, you will have a positive impact on our community and help shape the future by providing programs and other library services to children and families. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who enthusiastically embraces public library service and demonstrates a positive attitude, good judgment, and a commitment to teamwork.

The North Fort Myers Library was rebuilt with a new 25,000-square-foot facility in August 2019 serving North Fort Myers and surrounding communities. The North Fort Myers Library shares a campus with the North Fort Myers Recreation Center and is located between two large communities, Suncoast Estates, and Paloma Park. The library provides outreach opportunities to Island Coast High School, J. Colin English Elementary School, and other organizations.

As the Youth Services/Young Adult Librarian you will oversee the Youth Services and Young Adult departments of the North Fort Myers Library, supervising two Library Associates. You will have knowledge of the current trends in Juvenile and Young Adult literature. The successful candidate will be organized, adaptable, and collaborative with coworkers and community organizations. The key candidate will have knowledge of collections development and maintenance for children and teens, an effective communication style, the ability to think independently and with a team, basic knowledge and skills of current technologies, handle the timecards for subordinate staff, and assist in developing paraprofessional staff.

The Youth Services Librarian is one of 3 Librarians that acts as Manager on Duty ensuring the normal operations of the branch in the absence of the Branch Manager. The ideal candidate will have the ability to positively interact with diverse groups of people from the communities around the library to other Lee County Departments, schools, and non-profit organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide stellar customer service by assisting patrons of all ages using Library resources and services, including computers, electronic resources, reference, and readers’ advisory.
  • Maintain a regular schedule of collection maintenance and promotion of the children's and teen's collections through weeding, selection, and displays.
  • Demonstrate a proficiency in readers’ advisory to children and teens.
  • May be assigned to participate in branch-specific and system-wide committees.
  • Present tours and programs for school and community groups visiting the library.
  • May be in charge of the library for specific days or shifts.
  • Explain and administer library policies and procedures
  • Actively seek and participate in professional development opportunities and stay abreast of emerging technology and trends.
  • Communicate and work effectively and tactfully with co-workers, sharing information and working cohesively as a team.
  • Initiate, plan, and conduct a variety of programs and activities to encourage positive use of the library by teens, including but not limited to maker-based programming, crafts, gaming, Teen Advisory Group, special events, and school and community outreach.
  • Plan and present programs and activities for children and teens at the library and at outreach locations.
  • May supervise paraprofessional personnel.
  • Develop and maintain communication and contacts with nearby primary schools and community organizations that serve children.

Education, Experience, Licensing

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in Library or Information Science, or a closely related field from an accredited graduate school or a Bachelor’s Degree with current enrollment in an accredited graduate school and a projected graduation date within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possession of a Florida Driver’s License is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two year(s) related library experience.
  • One year(s) supervisory experience.
  • Experience with planning and presenting programs to children and teens is preferred.
  • Experience and/or education related to children's and teen's literature and programming.

Supplemental Information

  • Spanish Language Skills: Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Exceptional Communication: Strong communication skills are preferred.
  • Customer Experience: Ability to deliver an exemplary customer experience.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with fellow staff members to plan and execute library programs.
  • Adaptability: Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends in library services.
  • Community Engagement: Analyze community needs and develop targeted programs.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Relate positively to a diverse population, including children, teens, and speakers of languages other than English.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to bend, stretch, sit, and stand for extended periods. Lift and carry objects up to 35 lbs.
  • Equipment Operation: Proficiently operate cash registers, computers, photocopiers, self-check machines, and other library equipment.
  • Location Transfer: The County may require employees to make either a temporary, or long-term, permanent transfer to another library location to accommodate the organization's business needs.
  • Work Hours: This position requires 80 Hours Bi-Weekly; hours and days will vary to include evenings, Saturdays, and some Sundays.
