Starting Salary: $66,875 (Certified)

  • $21,928.31 in retirement contributions paid annually into FRS

Job Description:

School Safety is the top priority for the Youth Services Division. The School Resource Officer (SRO) will work in the school during regular school hours handling all complaints on campus and the ability to counsel students; must be familiar with juvenile laws; ability to obtain intelligence information regarding youth gangs, drug trafficking, criminal activities, and cults within the school and the surrounding community. The position of School Resource Officer uses a multi-faceted law enforcement approach while fulfilling additional roles such as teacher, counselor, and mentor. Additionally, this position provides an opportunity for SROs to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents while enforcing laws to promote a safe learning environment. SROs are expected to be well versed in agency policy and Florida law pertaining to their function within the schools. To achieve this objective, advanced training is required which will challenge deputies to meet the highest level of law enforcement standards. SROs will serve as back-up to road patrol deputies when schools are closed, which includes summer months and during times of natural disasters such as hurricanes. SROs will complete field training upon hire, prior to school assignment.


Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Protect the public and preserve the peace, serving in a variety of assignments
  • Interpret and enforce all applicable federal, state and local laws, general orders, directives, and policies and procedures of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office
  • Work independently under limited supervision
  • Must possess above average written and verbal communication skills to include the ability to conduct an investigation and subsequent interview
  • Must have the ability to instruct in a classroom setting
  • Must successfully complete the SRO academy, active shooter course, annual Youth Services training, and C.I.T.
  • Must be willing to instruct courses within the school and speak to the public
  • Must have the ability to communicate and be able to balance a working relationship between Law Enforcement and School Administrators


Physical Demands:
  • Must take and pass the Physical Abilities Testing (PAT) with a maximum time of 6:04


Minimum Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Must have obtained a high school or GED diploma
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Must have a Social Security Card
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony
  • Must not have used illegal drugs in the last 12 months
  • Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces
  • Must be able to work various shifts with rotating days off, as well as weekends, holidays and emergency events such as hurricanes
  • Must be able to speak, write and understand the English language
  • Must have 2 years experience as a Law Enforcement Officer


Preferred Skills:
  • Computer literacy
  • Knowledge of Lee County geography
  • Polite, courteous, and professional demeanor
  • Bilingual
  • Familiar with the juvenile justice system and alternative to arrest programs
  • Experience working as a School Resource Officer in the State of Florida or out of state
  • Be community-service motivated, willing and able to deal with juveniles on a daily basis

The Equivalency of Training (EOT) process is for out-of-state officers, federal officers and previously certified Florida officers with a four year or more break-in-service pursuant to section 943.131(2a), Florida Statutes and Rule 11B-35.009(3) or (4), Florida Administrative Code or for persons who served as a member of the special operations forces pursuant to section 943.131(2)(b), F.S. and Rule 11B-35.009(5), F.A.C.
