Working as an advocate in a law firm is an entirely different experience from working as an advocate in other types of agencies. Victim Advocate
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the dynamics of sexual and domestic violence;
- Ability to work in high pressure, limited resource work environment;
- Excellent written, oral communication and listening skills;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality;
- Computer literacy;
- Demonstrated ability to manage time, evaluate progress and adjust activities to complete assignments within established time frames.
Job Duties:
- Court accompaniment; Crisis intervention; Empathetic listening and support;
- Safety planning; Provision of information and referrals;
- Assistance with compensation claims;
- Gathering and assembling documents for restitution claims;
- Case management;
- Functioning as a liaison for victim with community agencies;
- Advocacy with community agencies and governmental offices;
- Notifications of court dates;
- Assistance with locating safe shelter/housing;
- Administrative duties such as file organization, time tracking, scanning files, etc.;
- Other related duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate will have:
- Legal advocacy experience;
- Basic knowledge of the criminal justice system and victims’ rights;
- Experience working in a law office and/or nonprofit.
Highly desirable:
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, psychology or related field or equivalent experience;
- Candidates who meet the certification requirements of the Domestic Violence Legal Document Preparer Program.
Compensation for the Victim Advocate/LDP position begins at $40,000 per year (new advocates) and increases commensurate with training and experience at a competitive rate.
