Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Estate Planning Attorney with 1-3 years of experience to join our dynamic team in our Louisville, KY office. This role is unique in that it blends traditional client-facing estate planning work with in-house legal responsibilities for Legato Financial Group. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of estate and trust law, as well as a willingness to provide general legal support for the company’s internal legal matters. This position will report directly to the Chief Experience and Operating Officer.
Key Responsibilities
Estate Planning & Client Services:
- Advise clients on estate planning matters, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advanced healthcare directives.
- Draft, review, and finalize estate planning documents tailored to client needs.
- Provide counsel on asset protection, wealth transfer strategies, charitable giving, and tax-efficient estate planning.
- Assist clients in the probate and estate administration process.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant state and federal laws governing estate planning and probate matters.
In-House Legal Support:
- Assist with internal legal matters related to contracts, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
- Draft and review corporate agreements, NDAs, vendor contracts, and employment-related agreements.
- Support the Chief Experience and Operating Officer in ensuring compliance with financial and legal regulations.
- Conduct legal research and provide guidance on operational policies, including risk mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with compliance teams to ensure adherence to relevant financial services laws and regulations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with financial advisors, tax specialists, and other professionals to develop comprehensive estate and financial plans for clients.
- Support HR in employment law matters, policy development, and dispute resolution.
- Provide legal insights on new business initiatives, service offerings, and strategic planning.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Kentucky (or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable time frame).
- 1-3 years of experience in estate planning, probate, trusts, or a related legal field.
- Experience with in-house legal functions, business law, or corporate compliance is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of estate and trust law, taxation, and asset protection strategies.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts in an accessible way.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- High ethical standards and commitment to client confidentiality.
Preferred Skills & Competencies
- Experience working in a financial services or wealth management environment.
- Familiarity with SEC, FINRA, and other financial regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of business succession planning and charitable giving strategies.
- Proficiency in legal research tools and estate planning software.
