POSITION: OPERATIONS MANAGER - SURFACE MINING
REPORTS TO: President, Lehigh Anthracite Coal LLC
SUPERVISES: Mine Pit Foreman
SUMMARY: The Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the mining process, while ensuring the safety and well-being of workers and compliance with environmental regulations. Manage a team of workers, coordinate with contractors and suppliers, analyze production data, and develop strategies to optimize productivity and profitability. The operations manager plays a critical role in the success of the mining operation, balancing the needs of various stakeholders while prioritizing safety, sustainability, and financial performance.

DIVISION: Mining - Operations
LOCATION: Tamaqua, PA
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures safe work practices of MSHA & PADEP regulatory compliance across all daily mining pit operations.
- Supervises all production functions in the surface coal mining operations.
- Coordinates with the Superintendent of Mobile Equipment Maintenance daily to ensure the required preventive maintenance and repairs to mobile mining equipment.
- Allocates mine resources (personnel and equipment) across all mining shifts / jobs to ensure execution of primary and secondary responsibilities.
- Works closely and communicates daily with the Operations Engineer for drilling and blasting optimization.
- Coordinates with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering to achieve daily key performance requirements and develops short, medium, and long range mine plans and production schedules.
- Works closely with Chief Operating Officer on employee hires, reviews, and disciplinary actions, following the employee handbook guidelines.
- Monitor production data and support continuous improvement and cost control efforts.
- Optimize safety and production through improved efficiencies, enhancing safety training practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Fill in periodically, as needed to cover for Mine Foreman vacancies for personal and vacation periods.
- Assist Engineering in the development of production budgets and monthly forecasts.
- Review monthly costs per job site and target areas for cost savings.
- Coordinate with Engineering on yearly reclamation goals and coordinate operations appropriately to achieve targets.
- Always ensure safe work practice, and regulatory compliance always.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: (preferred)
B.S. MINING ENGINEERING or CIVIL ENGINEERING
Experience:
Minimum 10 years’ experience in management and surface mining is required.
Knowledge:
MSHA knowledge and regulations is a must, with MSHA Certification Surface Foreman (CS) preferred.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Must have good verbal and written communications skills with ability to interact daily with a diverse group of individuals. Ability to work with software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and knowledgeable of AUTO CADD, or other CADD software that is adaptive to the mining industry.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English.
